I would like to know if a twin sized mattress would fit in a Prius? I was about to take measurements, but I thought it would be quicker just to ask.
A regular Twin is 39x74. The (2014) Prius cargo area is 39x68+, the plus depends on front seat positions. Ours is 69 and my seat back is not leaning back much, if any. It would be difficult, but doable, to move the front seats forward enough to gain the extra 5" and still drive a short distance, but it's not something I'd want to do and certainly not something you could do for any real distance, like to go camping, etc. That's why those who camp generally use a blowup/rollup mattress or a custom fit pad(s).
I just want to bring mattress home from the furniture store. I can drive slowly. If necessary, I can keep the hatch open with something to fasten it down.
Then it should fit, especially if it's wrapped in plastic (not in a box) and you can leave the hatch open. They do make Super Twins that are 80" long, but even that will fit with the hatch open and tied down. AFAIK, the 2014 dimensions are the same as 2012.
Foam mattress, folded over, maybe: length would be a possible issue. Regular mattress with springs, I doubt it.
39 x 74? That sounds about perfect. I stuffed a wingback chair in ours and drove it about 10 miles home with the hatch halfway open (but tied down of course). The only problem was the incessant beeping of the open door alarm for the entire trip!
He's not camping with it, just hauling it home from the store and can leave the hatch open with it tied down. If he also has a box spring, he'll need to put the mattress on the bottom because it's a tight fit at the wheel wells and the mattress will flex enough.
Measure the HATCH OPENING, not only the inside. If it doesn't go in the opening, it doesn't fit. How do I know? Standing behind my Prius 2 weeks ago with four sheets of 4 x 4 plywood in Lowes lot that DO NOT go through hatch opening.
The hatch is wider than 39", though not by much. Again, the mattress needs to go in first, because the box springs will not lay flat hanging out the back, the lower part of the hatch bows in.
A responder to another thread mentioned that a little thingy in the slot where the hatch latch goes can be moved to one side with a screwdriver to fool the Prius into thinking the hatch is latched closed, hence no maddening beeper. Worked for me and saved my sanity while driving a piece of furniture home with the latch tied down and partially open.
That "little thingy" is the moving part of the latch mechanism. You can fairly easily push it to the latched position with fingers or a suitable tool (an angled-tip screwdriver, for example). Another reason to "fool the Prius" that way is so you can leave the hatch open or not quite closed if you wish for any reason for a while without unnecessary battery drain.
Not sure if this will help you, but if you have 4' x 8' plywood and can have Lowes/Home Depot cut it lengthwise, such that it'll be 2' x 8', it'll fit in the Prius with the rear hatch closed. You'll have to lay the right-back seat down and lay the passenger seat back (I think you have to remove both headrests, too). And to the OP, I've seen people tie the mattress to the roof of the Prius. Not sure that's the best thing to do, but I've seen it done. Maybe if you are only driving on back streets and alley ways. But for those of you who tie anything to your roof, don't forget that you will have a tighter fit into your garage. In a Prius, it should fit easily, but you still should do the double check.

That's what I keep thinking. I'm just shy of 6', and know I can't quite stretch out in the hatch area. The front seats must be pushed forward to where you're real cozy with the dash and windshield.
I'm just looking at the seat belt position, where the seats are pushed way forward beyond the seat belts. So you have to be really tiny to drive with that mattress in there
He's going to leave the hatch open and tie it down for the trip home from the store. He's not using it for camping, just wants to haul it home.
Just for comparison, we fit my daughter new IKEA Daybed (3 flat packed boxes, 2 long ones and 1 square one) into my wife's v. We lowered the 60 side of the 60/40 rear seats and pushed the passenger front seat all the way forward and managed to get it all to fit and the hatch closed. The wife wasn't too thrilled, actually I'm sure she hated me for the 30 min ride home as her knees were literally on the glovebox and she had to sit kinda tweaked sideways... Would not have fit into my liftback I'm pretty certain. Without it sticking out a bit. FYI.
