Give it to me straight, did I overpay?

    So what exactly did I purchase? I'm going through all the paperwork right now and I'm just confused. If I went back and got my money from this Toyota Platinum plan, what would I be left with? What exactly is it that I paid for?

    If I remember correctly, after speaking to someone who bought that, it was a bumper to bumper warranty up to 7 years or 100k miles.

    It is suppose to cover everything...

    It appears that you bough an extended warranty for a lot of money.

    And besides you live in CA right? Cali is a CARB state which gives you 10 years / 150000 HV battery warranty, non carb states are only 100k miles.. So there is some reassurance right there. We also get a 5 yr/ 100000 power train warranty from Toyota.

    I did just google the platinum plan and it seems that there is quite a list of what is not covered! In essence it seems that you are paying 2k for 4 extra yrs and 56k miles of warranty coverage but with limitations and exclusions and adding to that the big expensive part to repair (HV batt) is already covered for longer than even your extended warranty....

    @Blizzard_Persona But I have no paperwork of those warranty plans. They didn't even mention those at all. So I'm just confused.

    So you paid over $2000 for a service contract aka extended warranty and they gave you no paperwork on what you paid all that money for and they didn't explain what is or isn't covered??

    I got a few things I could sell ya too :whistle:

    No I meant I have no paperwork for those warranties you mentioned. They gave me paperwork for their platinum protection plan.

    He did discuss the warranty plan, but it was done toward the end of the sale. I was just so excited that I was getting my first car, so I started "checking out" toward the end. I had been there for hours and was so exhausted. So I can't quite recall what he specifically said about the plan. All I remember is he said "bring it back when you drive it for 15,000 miles" and "this warranty will cover you until 100,000 miles or seven years, whichever comes first"

    I don't think there is that holy grail "best deal" on any car. Yeah, you can always read about someone boasting they got a brand new, fully loaded car for 10 grand under MSRP, additional grand off for buying on a Tuesday, free oil changes until eternity, and gold plated floor mats. But they are more the exception than the rule. Plus I think sometimes we all add a little bullschick to the deal. And let's face it, dealers know all about various web sites that will average out costs of purchase, etc., and they're going to play the game with you. You may have over paid, but in the end you got a great car. Not everyone is skilled at negotiations. I thought of myself as pretty good, but still ended up pay a bit more than others. Chalk it up to a learning experience. You're already a more savvy car buyer as a result of your purchase. And coming here will make you even better when you decide to buy your next car. Or any thing else. Life is short. Enjoy it. Enjoy it with a Prius. ;)

    It really doesn't matter what he told you is warrantied, the only thing that is covered is that which is in writing. Doesn't sound like you get much for all that money, $2000 is a lot of money to me, and I bought a Toyota because I believe in their reliability, maybe not so much for you.

    Yes the extended CARB warranty 10yr 150k miles applies, assuming the rental car was originally sold, registered, and primarily driven in California or other CARB state. Let's hope it was, because if not then the deal is not so hot.

    @wjtracy Nope. It was in Washington. Could that be why the salesperson didn't mention this at all?

    EDIT: I just googled carb states and it says that Washington is one, so nevermind my question. That's not it.

    So I took a stroll down to the dealer. I wanted to see what price they would offer me for a new 2015 Prius. I got this offer $1,000 off MSRP with 0% APR for 60 months OR $2,000 off MSRP.

    I brought up that there were other dealers taking off $4,000-$5,000 off MSRP (even though I don't where exactly these dealers are at, haha) and he said "then go there" o_O

    As for the platinum protection plan, I spoke to the guy from financial and this is what he explained. He said the car has one year of warranty or up to 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. Then after that, the warranty is gone. This platinum protection plans extends me up to 100,000 miles. I then asked about that CARB warranty and he said that it will only cover the engine and not other things like the touch screen pad, air conditioner, etc. So he basically told me I could cancel at any time but to think about it. He said ultimately it was my decision and if I wanted to take a gamble with it, to cancel but if I wanted to feel "protected" to just keep it.

    This guy is a piece a crap salesman, lies lies and more lies. I would cancel the entire transaction if he'll let you.

    Don't go strolling down to dealers to make yourself feel worse.......it's really true you can get AT LEAST $5000 off a 2015 Prius 2

    The instinct that you overpaid is unfortunately I think correct. But....
    It's not the worst deal.

    I think the best way to maximize value, is to hopefully keep and enjoy the vehicle as long as possible.

    When I was younger I made more than my share of bad car purchases.
    As you have now learned, the real advantage today is the wealth of available information on the internet.

    Assuming the the vehicle is in good shape. You overpaid a little. BUT...if like it? And if it's in good condition? Then you have a nice vehicle

    not to make you feel bad, but in socal area,
    I went with my friend for a BRAND NEW 2015 Prius two

    MSRP: $25,3xx
    sale price: $21,988 before any factory incentives
    addition factory incentives: $1,000 off MSRP with 0% APR for 60 months OR $2,000 off MSRP
    my friend took the $2,000 off options with standard 3.5% apr loan (he could get lower one from credit unit or other bank, he was just lazy)

    so he paid: $19,988 net plus tax and license = $22,1xx which is almost like your used 2014
    but new cars come with full 3 years 36k bumper to bumper warranty, I would gamble on a new car without extended warranty which I know if I treat my car right, it'll not give me trouble instead of buying a used for few thousands less and have to pay extended warranty, btw, 2015 have standard backup camera !!

    paid for warranty does almost nothing good other than make youself feeling better and gives dealer the year end bonus
    I have friends in past bought warranty from toyota, NOT ONE of them think that it's worth the money, you paid $1500~$2000 and only few of them really used it, one used on his power window which maybe cost $200~$300 if you pay cash, one prius had coolant leaks and later found out it's covered by standard hybrid warranty, not extended warranty and he regraded of stupidly paying $1.5k for that useless thing and said that he would NEVER do that again.

    You got completely ripped on the service agreement and the document fee.

    What the heck is an "official fee???" I Presume this is some kinda left coast thing, I would try to get the dealer to go halves on it and see what they say.

    There are a lot of people that paid much more for G3's when they first came out, so if you didn't get yoked on a trade-in to get this "deal", then you didn't get completely screwed on this deal, but I wouldn't brag about having showed the dealers who is the best haggler.
    Many people paid thousands more than you did for the same car, with a few hundred dollars worth of accessories.

    You bought a good car!
    Take care of it and pay it off as early as you can and then drive it until the wheels fall off.
