Started this winter as a misfire on random cylinders. I replaced all apart plugs and verified the gap. Replaced all the coils. Still occurred during the cold months. Once it warmed up it went away for a short while. The only codes present at the time were random misfire codes. Took it to a shop and they told me the injector was bad on cyl 1. Today I replaced the injectors with a matched set of 4 matched flow Denzo remand. Ran it on the TIS tech tool and was given a barrage of codes. I can unplug #1 coil and it will smooth out and stall within 90 seconds. Engine runs rough. Intake was just done as well. From Toyota TIS P3191 – engine didnt start P3000 - Battery Control System P3101 – engine system malfunction P3190 – poor engine power P1300 - ignition circuit malfunction #1 P0303 P0302 P0301 P0300 c1259 - ABS error code meaning problem with regenerative braking. Probably caused by me forcing the car to recharge the HV while misfiring. HV battery was getting dangerously low from sitting for the last 6 months. b0116 – LH airbag circut
I've disassembled the throttle body and reassembled it it moves freely. The MAF has been cleaned a least 5 times. No difference.
Re-seat connectors to the engine ECU? Our USA left-hand drive cars have the engine ECU to right of the passenger-side, glove box. Drop the box and the engine ECU is easy to reach. I only mention it as a very rare issue on older electronics. Bob Wilson
Is the butterfly operating correctly? With power off, the butterfly should be able to be manually rotated open quite easily by hand. With power on, the butterfly should "fight" you if you try to rotate it open.
I uploaded a you tube video of it running beautifully on 3 cylinders. I can change the coil #1 to any number of good ones and it starts to run rough even when not connected to the spark plug in the cylinder. So I have tried 3 different coils and changed the plug to a new one. I/m lost. Help!!!!!!!! The hood cable broke today and I had to cut the hood to get it open. So irritated with this car.
An interesting video. Is there any damage to the engine wiring harness that feeds the four spark igniters? Try wiggling the wiring harness while the engine is running on three cylinders. Was spark plug #1 installed when this video was taken? If not, does it make any difference if the plug is installed or not? Try disconnecting the other three spark igniters so that the engine will not spin, and have someone try to start the Prius while you observe spark igniter #1 connected to the wiring harness and with spark plug #1 inserted into the igniter, both removed from the engine, with a grounding wire attached to the spark plug threaded shell so that you can observe the spark plug tip. Will spark plug #1 produce a strong spark?
The engine runs great on 3 cylinders. You can connect a 4th coil and the misfiring begins. I can drive it around the block on 3 cylinders and it drives fine, a bit under powered. All 4 coils have been replaced, all 4 injectors (per toyota dealership) and all 4 plugs. Watch the video. It runs smooth on 3 cylinders. Once that 4th coil (any one of 3 I have, which are all good) it runs like crap.
Try my suggested test for cylinder #1 at the bottom of my post #9. If the spark plug does not spark, look for a problem with the engine wiring harness. If that produces a good spark and you don't see a problem with the engine wiring harness that feeds the four spark igniters, then maybe the engine ECU needs to be replaced - perhaps it cannot drive all four spark igniters in firing order sequence. The 2G repair manual suggests resistance checks on the igniter wiring harness connectors - the middle two connectors are the active terminals. The resistance to ground should be 10K ohms or more for each. Also, one terminal on each connector is common to all four wiring harness connectors so you should find close to zero ohms resistance if you measure from one connector to the next, on that terminal. The repair manual also shows how to verify resistance from each igniter wiring harness connector to the engine ECU wiring harness connectors. You will need to get the Classic repair manual and electrical wiring diagram info from techinfo.toyota.com if you wish to perform this test.
