I was going to wait to trade my 2005 in for 2016, but the deals now are just too good to pass up. Get a 2015.

I'd say get a 2 year low payment lease on a 2015 and by the time your lease is up the gen 4 will have been out for a year and by then hopefully all the bugs have been worked out. At that point you can roll righ into another lease on a gen 4 if the gen 4 is all that and then some or you can buy your 2015 or get something totally different by then..

Well, if you like watching grass grow or paint dry, wait it out for a 2016.

I can't see a good financial reason to wait for the 2016. The main reason for the Prius is to save money on your drive, what better way than to start off with $5000 off sticker on a 2015

That has been the prime focus with Prius, and that is why sales are tethered to gas prices (which is a way of saying, it's not all that nice of a car).

Heard someone say yesterday if iMiEV was $10k, it would sell like hotcakes.
Oh no it wouldn't. Very few people want to be seen in or be in an iMiEV at any price. As a car, it sucks.

Do you think that the 2015's will cost more when the 2016 arrives?

There are many reasons to buy a Prius.

Saving money the main reason for many people but for many others there is a different main reason or no single reason that is much more important than the others.

I don't think they will cost more! I just don't see the discounts going much higher at all.... The discounts are already huge. Only 1k plus 0% or 2k discounts advertised but obviously folks are doing a lot better. A la 4-6k off!!

Hey, guys! I'm new here. Actually, I'm new to the auto world as well - I've been driving my whole life, but the specs and details aren't really my strong side. Been looking for some easy-to-understand info on the new Prius - found this article - Toyota Prius specs - 2015 Toyota Prius Start Up and Review of Specifications - it's in plain english, easy enough for me to understand. Couldn't find any info on the price. I mean, actual price, real-life, like if I want to buy it the next week. Seems just the right pick for me. But you say it's better to buy the 2016? Can you elaborate on that? Please share your thoughts and some links if you got them for a noobe like me. Appreciate it!

    Welcome to PriusChat

I had a quick glance at the article you linked and think that you would learn more that's useful to you from Consumer Reports articles and ratings. Consumer Reports are not infallible or perfect but they are a probably the best single source of unbiased information out there. There are other sources for real world car prices that include for market conditions current discounts. I don't recall their names but a search on PriusChat should turn up a number of them.

I didn't say that its better to buy the 2016. There is insufficient solid information on the 2016 or what the pricing will be compared to the 2015 for a rational decision to be made at this time.

What is normally the case though is that when a car has a major model change (like the 2016 Prius), demand for the previous generation drops and it is heavily discounted to free up space and capital.

Because of this, if you are buying a 2015, the chances are it will drop in price after the 2016 arrives. The new model is however not the only factor that could affect demand for the 2015 so a price drop, or at least no price rise is likely, it is not guaranteed.

I agree with what many of the members have pointed out,
new generation prii will release some time between now and the end of 2016,
If you're not in an immediate need for a car I'd hold off to see what the 4th gen prii are like.
plug ins might also be an option if the rumors of 40miles range is a reality [40 miles will most probably correspond to 7500 tax credit]

May not be the best idea to buy a new car at the end of the year,
you'll only have 3-4 months till it's a year old (having a 2015 car in the year 2016)

It's a pretty poorly written article / blog page complete with run-on sentences. But, the lady on the gen2 is a plus.

If you want to know more about the coming all new 2016 Prius, see that section and look around. Probably the biggest change in it will be an all new next generation chassis with TNGA , Toyota New Global Architecture. It will have the same size gas engine, 1.8L, but the system is sure to produce more total power, probably in the 140 something range HP.

The 3rd gen Prius is a more robust car overall than the 2nd gen, but many people like the 3rd gen less mainly because of its polarizing interior design, especially the floating bridge center console. I saw this same type of thing happen about 10 years ago when Yamaha introduced an all new FZ1 motorcycle for my 2006. Many people thought in a lot of ways it was not that much better than the outgoing 2001 - 2005 FZ1.

Hopefully this new 4th gen Prius gets just about everything 'right' where complaints are very minor. For me, if it is not VERY comfortable, and sort of doubt the new one will be, than it's game over for me in the hybrid / alternative vehicle world. Then I sell next year and go conventional.

Thanks a lot for the quick reply, man! Got me really thinking about waiting until the 2016 arrives. I figure, if it'll be great, maybe i'll even go with it, if not, i'll still be able to get that 2015 edition, and maybe even with a drop in price.

    No, didn't call her.

I will probably try calling her after aug 4th (new/revised manufacturers incentives) or when it gets closer to an unveiling of the 2016 models.

    Thanks
