I've read that the new plug-in will be a 2017 and more then a year out.

My two year old car has lost the rough equivalent of 2,700 gallons of gas so far in value, provided I got great condition retail value. Just to put things in perspective.

Seems I read somewhere that there may not be a 2016 plug-in, Toyota may be pulling the plug on the plug in, at least for a while... don't know if there is any truth to it.

Totally agree with you. I live in a Chicago suburb, a busy place like where you live. It is a 24 hour a day job trying to keep your car from getting banged up. Mine is garage kept. That helps somewhat. I have a 2014 Avalon. I discovered recently that the back up camera housing was broken off. No other damage to the car. It is totally impossible for anything to have hit the camera and nothing else. Some teenager that had too much time on his hands had to be the culprit. One of the few places I went to was an automatic car wash with no brushes. I think the teenager who dried off the car did it but no proof. Just have to avoid a good car wash from now on to be certain. A PITA.

don't know how they will designate it, but pip production has ended, and the new one will be available late 2016. they said there will be 'enough' 15's to last until then, based on sales projections i guess.

...hmm, when did someone suggest that 2015 supply would last? (before or after Ca. extended the green HOV stickers?)

Every Prius is a depreciating asset. Tax incentives increase depreciation by reducing the new car's purchase price in the mind of the buyer. When dealers reduce the selling price of the new car that reduces the value of the old car.

By now PiP production should have ended. The Gen 4 PiP will be available in the second model year. Whatever is on the lot is all there is. The end of supply and rising "high" gas prices in California should be the end of low PiP prices in CA. If a seller doesn't have to sell there is no incentive to reduce the price.

In 2012, when PiPs came out, we had high PiP prices in Ca. and very low PiP prices back East by Fall 2012. The record low PiP deal I think was about $25.5k in NY around the time it was more like $30-31K at least in Ca. So we had quite a few Ca. folks buy new PiP's back East especially in MD as full CARB so there was no warranty impact. Some drove all the way home others had them shipped. So that's still an option (for used) I presume.

That was quite an exciting time actually on Prius Chat. Oh yeah, the WV guy that got 2 PiPs for $25.5k in NY then got the $7500 Fed + $7500 WV credits. Too much fun new PiPs for $15k net. WV killed their $7500 credit I think in April_2013.

Have you tried Edmunds.com? I just looked and there are quite a few plug-ins available within 500 miles at a much lower price then what you're quoting. For a car at the right price I'd travel to get it but that's because a few thousand makes a big difference for me.

People will drive across town to save $0.10 on a loaf of bread, and clip coupons for laundry soap but they won't drive 100 miles to save hundreds (or even thousands!) of dollars.

As pointed out earlier, there's a large margin between an up-optioned Prius and a base model.
    Be very careful!!!!

The G4 will be out soon(?)
Then, the leftover G3's will be even cheaper!! :D

Thanks, I didn't realize edmunds shows used cars for sale. The whole I was just using the appraise/trade in calculator.

I check for 100 miles and better results did show up.

    Thanks again!

    Thanks, good point!

I know a few people who do go across town to save a few pennies on bread (but spend dollars on gas)! Lol

I think the comment about crossing town to save pennies was meant to say that it's silly not to travel longer distances to save thousands. I drove about 370 miles to buy my 2013 base plug-in and was happy to do it.

Widen your search to 500 miles. That's 2 days driving and 1 night in a hotel if you decided to go that far. If nothing else it gives you some comparisons for negotiating a deal on a plug-in for sale closer to you. You might find the car you really want is a day's drive away at the price you want.

I doubt OP is comparing the same model trims, but perhaps those selling the used cars thought to gain a premium from their HOV stickers and Toyota's End of Life of production declaration a while ago. Also, it is not so uncommon to find people who ask selling prices based on msrp or the price they paid, rather than current going rates.
