So car enthusiasts are discussing cosmetics and lipstick, but not technology.

Yes Gremlin. The "Flying Fishbowl" Pacer was similar (but prettier)

If you don't learn to quote posts your post has no point. Heck even with a quote to put it in context it'd just leave a one liner. Not much content in your post to even reply to in context.

context: there are a few people here, who think if the gen IV isn't everything to everyone, or at least exactly what they want, toyota will be left in the dust. no car can do that, and the repeated postings won't change anything.

I don't think anyone expects it to be "everything to everyone".
It does need to have a greater appeal to what the market responds to. So a better term may be, "more to more people".

I personally think it would be funny if the mules being driven around are just planted decoys. If they want to road test the transmission and battery tech, they don't need the actual body on the car. They are sure as heck not road testing the aerodynamics. Someone could fit a Gen3 body on it, I'm sure. Or make it look like one of thousands modified Prii on the road. They could road test as much as they want and no one would bat an eye.
Perhaps think about this, maybe the hood and hatch design are their next-gen really cool stand-out design element. Consider that under the tarp there are "dummy" pieces that look nothing like the actual parts.

A lot of people are expecting the 4th gen Prius to essentially not be a Prius anymore: some are saying, doh, look, it's still fugly, still looks like a tadpole, a cheese wedge, why didn't they make it look good (like a sedan, is what they are most likely thinking).

For Toyota to take the top selling hybrid in the world, and do something stupid like basically make it a 'Corolla hybrid' would knock the Prius back to Camry hybrid level sales (3 or 4k a month in US).

(Hopefully) Toyota has walked a tightrope with 4th gen Prius: Still a Prius liftback, but a better, more appealing car to more people.

And, the Prius needs to be tethered less to gas prices,

agree with what you think is needed, what would be the point of coming out with a new gen if you weren't trying to increase sales? they've already said it drives better, so, even if it doesn't, they must be listening and trying. but disagree that there are some here who think it needs to be better than every other car on the road in all phases , and get better mpg's too. it's just not possible.

all alternative fuel vehicles are tethered to gas prices, that's why a certain segment of the population buy them, i don't see any way around that.

Just as Tony mentioned, several prototypes are usually built and there is absolutely no reason for all the hysteria.

The fact is that we are in July, 2016 models will be rolling out in the next few months. This sure could be the final car and usually cars look better in real life then sketches.
