My 2006 has lost the dash lights under the windscreen, the consumption data stops displaying (the screen is there, just no data) and the back-up camera doesn't work. The car performs perfectly normal otherwise. After a couple of times of driving and on-off procedures, the lights, camera and data all return until the next time. I've tried the key being inserted into the ignition slot and it will get stuck and not come out. It releases at it's own sweet time. Very frustrating ad I don't want to get ripped off with dealer repairs. I've looked at all the fuses in both locations and all appear fine. The stereo, climate control, windows, lights, etc all continue to work during these outages. Any suggestions? Thanks.
always the first thing to check is your 12v battery when you get unusual or intermittent problems. the 12v might not be the problem but that is the first step in the diagnosis tree. if its the original battery its time to replace it anyway.
It sounds like you may have a failed combination meter. Read through this thread and see if that is of some help. You may be still in with a chance of a warranty repair, depending on when you car first went into service. Combination Meter Warranty Enhancement In regards to your key fob seemingly being stuck in the ignition slot, it is because the car is not actually off. When this next happens, press and hold the start button for 3-5 seconds to ensure the car really switches off. Hope that helps.
My 06 just fell victim to this issue as well. Be warned, if your in Service date is 1 day past the 9 Year point Toyota will tell you to go pound sand. Mine is 10 days past and that's what they told me. However there is a very good video on how to replace this board. If you do a search on Ebay there is a guy who will repair the defect on your board for 115 bucks. I just took mine out today, its not that hard really, however the car is unusable until you have the repaired board or a replacement. Be careful about places that do board swaps, not all of them reprogram the odometer, if you get someone elses board your mileage will be incorrect.
Luscious Garage | Blog | Prius Combination Meter (dashboard) - Repair Available ** REPAIR NO LONGER AVAILABLE must have a high failure rate
so far mine has not died but I did learn the mileage is stored in the cluster (if the cluster goes out how are you to know the mileage for programming the new one?)..i always thought it was with the main computer...learn something new everyday I guess
My understanding is there are a few offerings on this repair. In my case they are repairing my board so I will get the board back with my true mileage, I do not know what the "repair" is but I am willing to bet it's the Voltage Regulator on the speedo assembly, and if that truly is the bad component they are making a killing on these repairs as that regulator is about a 99 cent component and 3 soldering points, however this is just speculation. There are other places that offer a board swap with a board of "similar" mileage to yours however this leads me to question the legality as you have now altered the actual mileage of the car. Lastly there are places that can reprogram the board with your true mileage, but again they are taking your word for what the mileage is. Does anyone out there know what is actually the problem with these boards?
the link I posted got a I.M. from them saying they no longer offer repair service so my guess is the repair has a high failure rate..if its like the LCD TV's 9 out of 10 times its a .30 cent capacitor or diod..
I suspect it's not viable for Luscious to do these repairs any longer as they are a Hybrid Vehicle shop not a Speedo shop. Im putting a leap of faith into this repair as David does offer a Lifetime warranty on the repair but I know those are only as good as how long he stays in buisness. . His Feedback on Ebay is excellent so it's seem like a worthwhile bet. Also at $115 bucks it's significantly less money. I'll have mine back in a couple days so when I reassemble the dash I'll post how it went.
I believe that most of the time the cause is dry solder joints, so the fix is to find and re-solder the dry joints. Most of the cost is time.
i wonder if you use a heat gun to reflow the solder if that will fix it.. i know it worked on my old HP laptop I guess Ill worry it when it happens to me.
