What do you guys use to repair car tires that are off the rim (from the inside)? Can I use some kind of adhesive, like silicone?
I will try to see if a shop will do it. But failing that, will this work? I assume it does not need a separate application of vulcanizing paste. Correct?
This one has better reviews: And I'd still use the rubber cement with it. It will make inserting the plug easier, and it will make a better seal.
I've used a plug repair a couple of times now, once on the OEM, once on the snows. Worked fine, has held up. I splurged and got the black jack kit, around $50. Kt-340 - BlackJack Tire Repair
Not trying to sound crass but if the tire is off the rim already, a tire shop or someone with proper tooling had to take it off for you. Is the area needing repair out of limits...like too close to the sidewall or something else?
Right. Plug and patch from the inside is the industry standard. Not just a DIY plug. Those are not considered to be safe.
I'm not advocating for others, but: One of our OEM tires had a finishing nail, say a thumb's width from corner of tread. The dealership wouldn't touch it, said it was too close. I opted to do an old-school plug repair, that was maybe two years back About a year later picked up a small bolt in one snow tire, about the same distance from tread edge. Didn't bother asking, knew the answer, plug repaired it. It's fine too. Maybe risky, I know, but they seem very solid.
It is a fairly old tire and that spot has been repaired twice already. Started leaking again so I figured may as well replace it. My interest in it is keeping it as a backup tire. Now if only I can find a rim to mount it on...
