How to Program a New Key Fob for Full SKS Functionality

I am finding out that a chicken dance will not restore the SKS remote to a full function. The chicken dance only works with a new previously never programmed remote. With a used remote, both remotes including a newly required used remote must be re-programmed to function as one by a locksmith or a dealer for a full SKS function.

 

Yes that is correct. You cannot program a used key easily. You would need to reseed the car and delete all the keys in memory and then add the ones you have on hand to the car. It normally costs much more doing it the used route vs just buying a new one and programming yourself.

Success with 2006 Prius and FOB purchased from Amazon.

I had no problem with Procedure B, but Procedure A gave me problems. Tried a dozen times to do A (steps 1 & 2) and it did not go into program mode (anti theft light did not stay lit). I went ahead with the Procedure B and it worked the first time. I came back a couple of hours later and tried Procedure A and it worked perfectly.

One other person on this forum reported a similar problem.

Just wanted to say "Thanks" and report my success. Bought a used 06 Prius that came with only 1 SKS Fob. Was able to obtain a new OEM SKS fob from a Toyota dealership online. Followed your instructions to the detail and had success in my first try. Saved me a lot of money and headache. Had a local locksmith cut the key for the door and I am good to go.

Best advice, read/study/memorize the procedure carefully and practice the steps. I see no reason why this wouldn't be successful for someone having a new OEM fob. Additionally, when opening the doors a number of times make sure that the door ends up in its original state (ie...open or closed). And as others have stated, keep in mind 1 lock cycle = 2 clicks (lock, then unlock).

 

So far, I haven't heard of a dealer programming used key fobs. Did you end up getting your fob programmed?

Before finding this post, I had gotten half successful (starting the car with new FOB) but not the opening / closing remotely and touchless features.

What really helped me were the time limits and expectations. The last one, holding down the lock function on the new one for a long time (while watching the dash key program car icon blink, and then finally not blink) put me in business. You saved me frustration and lots of money!

Also, if you have a friend who is connected to a dealer like I did (through my mechanic), my fob was only $108 more or less.

So painful, but not too much.

....Afterthought.

Well, tonight I could a) open the door (keyless entry); b) start the car with new fob, but not c) lock it.

Now my original fob is fobbed up with the close button so imagining that might have something to do with it.

On the original, the close works 1/5th of the time.

Update -- Update - Update

Yea!!!! It wasn't closing because the back hatch is a bit sticky. Once I closed it perfectly, the FOB worked like a charm.

My Prius is 2005 US model, I'm in Serbia so I ordered brand new key from US on ebay. My friend told me that frequencies of transmitters in US and Europe dont match!
I have full SKS, remote lock/unlock and start/stop. GOOD JOB usnavystgc!!!

 

Just want to say thank you to usnavystgc for your assistance in helping me successfully do the chicken dance with my 2008 Prius. Step 9b was done twice before the locks cycled for me. I then quickly pressed the lock key on the new fob and nothing happened. I then got out of the car, locked it with the old fob and set it aside. I then approached my locked car with the new fob in pocket and it beeped to let me in and I was able to start the car pushing the power button with the fob still in my pocket. Success! It would seem step 9c was not needed with my car as I waited a couple minutes with no cycling of the locks. I do want to say that after the double pressing of the buttons in step 9b that I am pretty certain I heard a double cycling of the locks. Now I just need to get the mechanical key cut at Home Depot or WalMart. BTW, got the key fob on Amazon from DaytonaToyota for $104.99 with prime. Many thanks!!

 

Thanks for the guide. I also had to replace the lithium batteries. For reference they are CR2032.

The other thing was: I read on here that some people are holding unlock/lock on the old FOB for 1.5 seconds first. Also some people are doing that step twice. I tried that instead after I replaced the batteries and thankfully it works fully now for auto unlock!

This is how I remember it, all I can say with 100% certainty is I did lock/unlock on the old key first:
-1.5s hold unlock/lock on the old fob after taking it out the last time (got nothing?)
-1.5s again (1 lock?)
-1.5s on the new FOB (got 1 lock?)
-Unlock on the new FOB (1 lock?)
-Key was new OEM from DaytonaToyota, sourced the same as the above poster.
