Yes I have the cover for the fuse panel and your right about ECU. I have it exposed and see no damage. I assume that in the little fender bender something happened that we have not found YET.

I have the electric wiring manual and understand the process right up to the ready light.

Now at this point what ECU is not working right?

    Quote
    3. Hybrid Start–Up Operation (READY)
When the electrical key turns on half–inserted SW and deep–inserted SW after inserting in the key slot, transponder key
computer activates transponder key amplifier incorporated in key slot to identify ID. After the identification, if power SW is
pushed with depressing brake pedal, power source control ECU starts. The ECU confirms that the brake pedal is depressed
from signal of stop light SW and also requests transponder key computer for ID identification result. If the ID identification is
normal, the ECU turns on ACC relay, IG1 relay and IG2 relay, and changes indicator of power SW to amber lighting. Power
supply is IG ON condition then.
After that, power source control ECU sends start–up signal to hybrid vehicle control ECU. Hybrid vehicle control ECU and
transponder key computer make communication for start–up permission. Hybrid vehicle control ECU controls to start–up
    hybrid system (READY).
At starting up hybrid system, power source control ECU controls to light off indicator of power SW.

    End Quote
Any suggestions what to probe or test

While I don't have a Gen 2, I have picked up along the way a paper copy of the 2004 New Car Features Manual (which is also one of the manuals you can view on techinfo.toyota.com).

Patrick mentioned way back when that your codes indicated communication trouble between the battery ECU and the ECM, and between the combination meter and the Gateway ECU.

Page TH-42 of the New Car Features Manual shows that the ECM and battery ECU are both on the CAN, while the Gateway ECU forwards messages between three networks: the CAN, the BEAN (which the meter ECU is on), and the AVC-LAN (for the multi-display, though you didn't seem to have any codes for a problem there).

That's just the big network overview picture from the New Car Features Manual. To find the actual wiring and connectors involved, the Wiring Diagram Manual could be your next stop.

Also in the New Car Features Manual there's a much more detailed introduction to all three networks, pages BE-47 to BE-66. I can't make you look there, but if you don't, you like doing things the hard way. :)

Ha ha, that reminds me of an saying my dad use to say, "You can lead a mechanic to the manuals, but you can't make him read."

    Or something like that. :D

I have the tech manual and wiring. Your Father was correct but reading them is not the problem. The Problem is the car was lightly taped in the rear. And the ice never ran again, so I'm still looking for physical damage. The wiring book is my best clue but knowing the output of each line in all the different modes is what I'd like. Say as a example on engine controller at 20 MPH line point 8 goes from 0 to 12 volts and if not trace backward to the controller that controls that. OK am I weird or what. MG1 has not turned that I'm aware of. And the wiring diagrams say 12 volt battery goes to starter. I know is not a conventional starter but interesting. Checking that line now.

Have you read the section on 'multiplex communication' in your New Car Features Manual?

Is it possible that you might?

It might not be your favorite arrangement, but reality is that when you're looking for technical information on your Toyota, techinfo.toyota.com is where that is. Usually the car itself is enough of an investment that another $15 at techinfo doesn't seem extravagant for the hours of work and hundreds or thousands of dollars of possible mistakes it will save us.

If you like the paper version (it's the same manual either way), you can watch the bay of E, they'll occasionally pop up. Just look for "2004 prius new car features" or the publication number NCF255U. Eventually you can score one that way, but your time is worth something too.

The three main repair manual volumes (and the wiring manual, which you say you already have) are still available through the official channel, Helm, Inc., if you want to get them that way. Vols. 1 and 2 are original printings, the volume 3 is a reproduction.

You have a battery problem. There should be another code for something battery related.
