Hear in Fla. if you are caught stealing gas (drive off with out paying) the driver loses their drivers license for 6 months and has to pay a fine plus the gas cost. Any one know what the penalties are for the state you live in?

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(priusguy04 @ Apr 17 2006, 02:46 PM) </div> When gas prices hit a high here in Honolulu last year (due to Katrina and our enormously unsuccessful "gas cap") gas was stolen out of vehicles left parked on the street overnight.
Wait whats that buzzing sound its kinda faint, Oh ok its hybridTHEvibrator mumbling something buzzzz buzzzzz. Red Ginger~ What this gas cap you keep refering to?
I would imagine it's like stealing any other product... Not sure what happens if you drive off, as opposed to stealing like at a mall parking lot or something (which is how I would do it if I were so inclined, park my Prius right up next to that H2... h34r: )... So I guess my answer would be: Just don't get caught.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(priusguy04 @ Apr 18 2006, 12:38 AM) </div> Here in Hawaii, the gas cap is not what you replace after filling your tank. It was an uneduated effort by our legislators to control gas prices here in Hawaii by using a price index based on other markets. The cap went into effect last September, just during the time of the Katrina/Rita price surge. While the public supported the cap initially, a recent public opinion poll shows that 68% oppose the cap. Now even the senators and representatives -- largely interested in being reelected -- are supporting a repeal (some support a more limited repeal, which would effectuate the cap again if certain circumstances arise). Whether the gas cap will continue (it probably won't) will be decided over the next few weeks of our legislative session. http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/...P604180325.html As for me, I bought a Prius so I can spend as little time and money at Hawaii gas stations as possible. I am convinced that there must be more Prius hybrids sold in Hawaii than anywhere else in the country. Perhaps our gas cap was simply an effort to help hybrid sales in Hawaii. Who knows.
In Michigan you lose your driver's license. I suppose there are fines involved too. I have an ex-brother-in-law that stole "gas" from a farmer's tank when he was a teenager. The gas turned out to be diesel fuel. He had enough real gas in his tank that his car still ran, but it smoked like a crop duster. Served him right. Tom
In Oregon it’s a criminal act to steal gas. The penalty depends on the dollar amount. $20.00 worth would be a Misdemeanor and jail time. $1000.00 worth of gas would be a Felony (could get prison time for that.) No matter what, as of Jan 1st, 2006, you’ll lose your license too. Don’t remember for how long because the new books haven’t been delivered yet, but I think it’s 90 days. In reality, no one ever seems to go to jail for long in this state. I popped a dope dealer late last year for Possession. Manufacturing, and Distributing methamphetamine, he had a felony warrant for absconding from his parole officer and was driving while suspended misdemeanor. It was his 60th arrest. He pled guilty and he got more probation. I'll bet he learned his lesson. It could be worse though. I have some buddies who work for the RCMP in BC. They can't keep anyone in jail there.
I made it fairly easy for theft on Monday. I forgot to put the cap back on and close the door. Noticed it later, but only after I'd eaten dinner then shopped at Best Buy for a while. I thought a warning light would come on to indicate the system wasn't sealed? I saw nothing...
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(priusguy04 @ Apr 17 2006, 07:46 PM) </div> Sounds like yet another law to keep track of. Why is gas different than any other item that can be stolen? With this logic if you ever get caught stealing clothes then you should have to walk around naked for 6 months. Or if you get caught stealing food then no eating for 6 months. I don't know what it's like in CA but hope that it's treated like any other crime (no special penalties). Knowing the CA legislature I doubt that this is the case.
