hey all, i was wondering if anyone has removed the resonator for the airbox yet? if so any tips? thanks!
I don't think you want to do this. The atkinson cycle engine may need this for proper breathing. Nate

Combine your resonator removal with a K&N filter and you should feel more power instantly. The resonator is used SOLELY to reduce air intake charge noise. You won't create any adverse affects by doing this. Just better response and efficiency.

Don't expect anything more than 1hp, maybe 2 with the K&N and minus the resonator. Most Prius owners are obsessed with efficiency, this is just another step in that direction. Obviously, the most benefit would be felt during highway passing.
Expect *NOTHING* in terms of HP gains on a Prius- the tiny displacement engine with its Atkinson cycle intake means that the engine is *NOT* intake restriction challenged.. It doesn't even need 300 CFM airflow at max RPM, so even completely removing the airbox (assuming that's something that you wanted to do), wouldn't help the Prius with horsepower...
Wouldn't this decrease the MPG? My last two vehicles where it was popular to do the K&N FIPK's, MPG was decreased 1-3 mpg.
In the process of fooling with warm-air intakes and all, at this point I'm running around with the intake hose simply disconnected and tucked back behind the headlight. I maybe hear a little more intake noise from the airbox, but there seem to be no differences plus or minus on mileage. Finally changing the air filter, on the other hand, may have had a nice side-effect... . _H*
reasons for removal: (in no particular order) - i like a little extra noise - the hunk of plastic is just a waste of space/weight - air doesn't have to get sucked thru a twisted tube of noise abatement - possible performance enhancement - i like the noise so i take it no one has removed the resonator from under the hood... the damn thing is really stuck in there! lol! anyways, thanks for all the responses... i ended up doing what "hobbit" did, tucked the tube behind the headlight...
With the Atkinson coupled with the PSD, these mods are nearly useless. Total power in KW is monitored by the HV ECU and governed. For the most part adding power to the ICE will simply charge the battery quicker, until you reach approximately 60 mph when full engine power is routed to the wheels under WOT. For uphill climbs at WOT you may be able to keep the battery charged an extra few seconds before apparent depletion (40%), but adding engine power won't improve straightline acceleration until you reflash the HV ECU with performance software. Some Japanese programmers have worked on some code, but it tends to overheat your battery due to excessive current flow. Lithium ion helps to solve this problem and unleash the potential of all 400 ftlbs available in MG1, but don't expect that until '09. Some guy installed a turbo on his 1st gen Prius, and the performance enhancement was noticed in terms of higher MPG and better climb performance. FYI adding a K&N air filter made no change in mpg. Now tuning the intake length to work at say 75mph might work.
