Anyone get 60 MPG city driving?

60 In the city, yea i wish . I have no problem with 50+ on the Highway but I am lucky to get 40 in the city. I have tried several diferent driving styles and nothing seems to matter. I am hoping the warmer weather will help city MPG

Last summer I did record 63MPG on the MFD. However the driving was congested freeway at 20 to 35 MPH for 4-5 miles. This was right after a session of coservative faster freeway driving of 60MPH for about 90 minutes. I have never again duplicated this. I would not call that typical City Driving. Perhaps typical driving in Japan where it can take 2 hours to drive 20 miles! Oh, that's right the Prius is made in Japan.

I agree, all these Prius-baiting articles are shy on actual experience or research. They never provide info gathered from owners. Considering the wealth of experiences available on this site, it would seem easy enough to write a balanced article. But the current journalistic style is to feature controversy. Doesn't matter if they're reporting on politics, world diplomacy, or the relative trivia of miles per gallon.

And on the matter of comparison to the Corolla, they persistantly ignore the fact that Prius is rated a mid-size car, Corolla a compact. And for price point comparison, they always ignore the feature package in the base Prius which matches most brands LXI/GLX trim lines.

 

New tank of gas today. MFD sitting at 59.7 MPGs for 31 miles of city driving. Tomorrow when my wife takes the car three miles to work and then three miles back, those MPG numbers will be all shot to hell.
Short city drives are a MPG killer due to the warm-up cycle.

I have a paper route so most of the miles I put on my Prius are residential. Lots of stop and go. There are alot of straight stretches where I can pulse and glide.

I live in Downtown Washington DC. One of the most congested urban areas in the country according to all studies. Most of my driving would certainly qualify as 'around town' by most any standard except maybe downtown Tokyo or Manhattan.

It's my only car, and it goes to the grocery store, the hardware store, and the pharmacy in the middle of sub-zero nights to get cold medicine.

In my 33K of Prius Driving, also calculated the 'old fashioned way', I have a lifetime average of just about bang-on the 55MPG EPA Estimate. That's winter, summer, snow, sleet and rain.

If I threw out the first two month learning/break-in curve, it would be a bit higher.

I guess I'm just a liar though. That's the only way I could possibly get that kind of mileage. Forget the reciepts I have filed. I forged em. I confess.

Lousy mileage? Is it your car, or your foot?

 

60 mpg driving is the norm for me in > 50F, < 85F weather. 70 mpg over a tank is uncommon -- obtained three times in my 18 months of car ownership. I have put quite a bit of effort into learning the Prius though, and a lot of local conditions and driving habits aid FE, while only a few hinder.

FOR:
All city/suburban driving, usually low congestion or routes with timed signals. I do my best to avoid braking.
High altitude, which adds 1 - 2 mpg for 'free'
Minority of trips less than 10 miles
Lots of opportunities to P&G
Low humidity climate, so less AC demands

AGAINST:
My wife obtains FE results about 5 - 10 mpg less than me on identical routes
I live in the foothills, so my daily drive starts downhill for the first 5 minutes, during the warm-up phase of the car.

Compared to EPA, Our Prius does a little better with two drivers (me the major) than my Honda Civic did with me as the only driver, due to our efforts. Not to say I was a lead-foot driver with the Civic, just not as focused as I am now.

Keep in mind that gas makes a difference too. There are regional and seasonal formulas for gas with varying energy densities, so the same car and driver might get 45 mpg in one area of the country and 50 mpg somewhere else.

 

I do most of my driving in the Philadelphia area. I average 41-44 mpg. If I do more highway driving during a given period I can get the mileage up to 46 mpg range. But, I have yet to break the 50 mpg rang in the city.

The easy way, if you don't want to do the math, is go over to google and type in something like:

60 miles per gallon in liters per 100 km

It will recognize its a math problem automatically and calculate the answer:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=6...+km&btnG=Search

60 miles per gallon = 3.92024307 liters per 100 km

Likewise you do:

4 liters per 100 km in miles per gallon

and it gives you the result.

Its pretty handy for unit conversion.

I got over 60 once, at the end of summer. OK I do cheat I have found the best route for me to and from work. It is rolling hills, all below 40 mph. 5 stop signs or lights on the way. I use coast and glide. The 61mpg was prior to the block heater and radiator blocker during the last bloom of summer in September. I am hoping to do better this summer. I go by the calculated mpg from the pump. I have not had a 3 or 4 tank average over 60 but I really think I will this summer. I have not dropped below 50 this winter. It can be done. Will I get 110. I don't think so. Life will not allow that. I am hoping to break 70 at some point though. I can do it!

 

Here in San Diego, I've averaged about 44 mpg (calculated) over my first 1,000 miles. The MFD has been "optimistic", and has shown 45-47 mpg at time of fill-up. My area has a lot of rolling hills, and my driving is about 50/50 freeway and surface streets (35-45 mph).
I'm curious what degree of acceleration yeilds best mpg. Is brisk acceleration, to get up to speed quickly, followed by pulse and glide the best choice? What about starting out on uphill stretches? Does it really make a difference?
I notice a lot of the EPA busters are in Florida or other relatively flat areas.
