The wife and I are on our way to Vegas from California when we stopped off for gas in Baker. As we are leaving we see a car dressed as it were being road tested. Upon further inspection it looks like it might be a Prius. I took a quick video as I drove by but it's not the best quality.

Tell me what you guys think.

Did it appear as if the Prius in front of it was with them? If only you would have gotten out and snapped a few shots. Definitely a stealth wrap or the worst plasti-dip mod I've ever seen! :)

It looks like a lot of cardboard or whatever under the tape, to bulk it up, obscure the actual outline. As far as snapshots, you can play it full screen, pause and do screen grabs. Did anything definitive stand out, say "this is a Prius"? It certainly has the profile.

I agree. I would have asked them as I was passing, "Why all the black tape?"

At the very least that is a Toyota prototype for sure. Notice the "Vortex" generators by the side mirrors which is something Toyota is adding to all of their models. The front end of the car seems to borrow heavily the design features of the "Mirai". I have a feeling that it is going to be somewhere between a "Mirai" and a European Avensis.

They might be trying to do what Ford does with the Mondeo (Europe's version of the Fusion). They offer a 5 door model that looks just like the sedan but has the practicality of a hatchback without the hatchback look.

It was some Toyota concept for sure. The bumper looked like a Prius front end with a some updates. And the hatch and trunk interior was almost exactly like mine in my 3rd gen. I'm 99% sure it was a new gen Prius though. The guys that were driving it weren't letting people take pictures, but you can see the tail lights are different, the front fender mirror we have was replaced with a vortex generator. And the rear quarter panel roof slope seems to be kinda squared off like the old volt.

I don't know if it's the lighting but the hood had a funny bulging upwards.

It does look like a Prius, so much so that it doesn't seem to fit the rumors of dramatic design change. Could this test mule be based on the first design that was rejected. If so, it could still be used to trouble shoot the drive train and the new platform.

I don't, however, see the Prius hatch split window and spoiler, so who knows. Some other hatchback?

    Thanks for the glimpse.

Oh thank goodness,. At first I thought you said the 'interior was almost exactly like my 3rd gen', but you said the 'trunk interior'.

Doesn't look that sporty to me. I thought new design was suppose to be a heavy redesign to make it sporty.

    Nice find!

And they're right - if a subject is out in a publicly accessible place, photography is fair game. They may not like it, and the masking of the mule should protect the actual design profile, but beyond that, there's not a whole lot they can do - legally.
