This just came out today. Not sure it goes in this forum, but I figured its news today, but its worth broader general discussion as well. These videos (see the other videos under the Prius) really demonstrate the importance of side impact airbags. Why are they optional? They should be standard on all cars. Prius Crash
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(jonas @ Apr 17 2006, 11:37 AM) </div> Ouch! That's hard to watch.
It's standard on all Hondas... Hmm, I'm surprised a lot of glass still came flying through even with the curtains. On the Corolla, that crash test had less glass flying towards the passenger side.
The airbags worked well, but as Tideland Prius said, that was an awful lot of glass to be coming through. Anybody else have experience with this type of collision?
anyone know at what speeds and how much that crash vehicle weighs.. it doesn't look very heavy. i would expect them to test with a heavier crash vehicle.
I accidentally bought a Prius w/o side curtain airbags, and I'm just sick about it -- especially after seeing the crash tests. Peace --
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(jonas @ Apr 17 2006, 01:37 PM) </div> jonas...thanks for that link. Man, sure glad I ordered the Package 4 now!!!! Holy crap! When you see it in slow motion like that.....almost makes me want to drive my car with my bicycle helmet on
Did anyone see the dummy in the back of the non side airbag car? Looks like the head almost came off! I'm glad I got a package 7.
W A R N I N G W A R N I N G W A R N I N G ! ! ! ! Do NOT watch this video if you cheaped out and bought a Prius (or ANY car) withOUT side impact airbags! ! ! ! ! ! W A R N I N G W A R N I N G W A R N I N G ! ! ! ! presented as a public service by priusham
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(V8Cobrakid @ Apr 17 2006, 04:56 PM) </div> The test configuration resulting from this research is a 31 mph (50 km/h) perpendicular impact into the driver side of a passenger vehicle. The moving deformable barrier that strikes the test vehicle weighs 3,300 pounds (1,500 kg) and has a front end shaped to simulate the typical front end of a pickup or SUV. In each side-struck vehicle are two instrumented SID-IIs dummies representing a small (5th percentile) female or a 12-year-old adolescent. These dummies are positioned in the driver seat and the rear seat behind the driver. http://www.iihs.org/ratings/side_test_info.html
It is what I have always said... get all the safety stuff you can. I can not even want to think what Efuco is going to say. He has to deal with this day to day. I learned all I want about emergency medicine and ER's in 3 months in Medical School. Quick summery... be safe... at any cost. The cost of side airbags on any car is not worth the cost of not having them when the proverbial shit hits the proverbial fan. I do not get many chances to be in the trauma situation but when I am it is bad... very... very bad. Be SAFE. Please
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(priusham @ Apr 17 2006, 08:47 PM) </div> now you tell me. ouch. i think i'll skip the bicycle helmet and use the full face motorcycle helmet instead.
Wow.... That video really does make you stop and think. I never really consider that stuff, and often balk at those $2k-$3k worth of safety extras... It's only because I wanted leather that I went for pkg 8, but I am very glad to have done so now! :-\
did not have too much of a choice of cars when I bought mine in 3/2004. You got what came in.. thank god it was a package with the side air bags!!
What amazes me is that cars here in Belgium consistently seem to come loaded with more standard safety features than in the US. Each Prius sold in Belgium has 8 airbags (front, side & curtains), *and* Vehicle Stability Control Plus as a standard feature. The same experience when I bought my Volvo XC70
The side airbags come with Package 3 and above. Anything below that wasn't even offered at the dealership I bought my Prius from.

It's got to be one of the lowest cost safety (and security) improvements you can do to your car. http://www.llumar.com/na-eng/Automotive/auto-safety.html
