Started the car the other day and a loud whining noise followed by the car "jumping" when I stepped on the gas. It would go/stop for a second, then shut down. Mechanic who is not a Prius expert said it was the tranny. He could put in a used one (77k miles) for $2800. Car has 250k miles on it. Is it worth it? Or should I just part it out. I'm worried about things like the battery going next. Thx for the help.
Are any warning lights on? What diagnostic trouble codes were logged? You may want to obtain another opinion from a mechanic who is a Toyota hybrid expert. Assuming the diagnosis is found to be correct, I would say it is not worthwhile to repair the car at that price. It is reasonable for you to be concerned about other expensive components (the traction battery is just one of many) that might fail next. Good luck with your decision.
Yes. The car lit up like a Christmas tree. It's funny because it was running fine, then BAM! Dead. Looking at a few 2012-13 ones today.
shorted windings happen like that. thats kind of expensive for a used tranny. if you can't get her done for under $1500., part it out.
I think you should take it to a hybrid specialist for a 2nd opinion. My friend has a Lexus 400h and hybrid error came up and the car was shaking. Took it to a regular mechanic and they saw the hybrid error and told her the battery has failed and needed $6000 for replacement. My friend didn't want the car anymore with such an expensive repair, decided to give it to me as a project. I hooked up my techstream and found the problem to be an ignition coil which was $100. I replaced it and gave her back the car. So always get a 2nd opinion on expensive repair quotes.
No dinner, just a thank you. I didn't expect anything as this person was going to give me the car for free even though it was worth $5000 not running. I wouldn't feel right taking it when the repair was only $100. I'm sure when it fails again she'll eventually let me have it
I may try that if anyone knows someone in the phoenix metro area. But just in case I bought an'12 four 33k mi loaded with all bells n whistles. Man thats a lot of owners manuals....
