Battery ECU secrets and teardown (warning: geek content)

    LOL!

    I said as I meant; The Battery ECU has no communication means other than the CAN bus. It would be pretty silly of Toyota to run the CAN bus all the way to the back of the car just to terminate it! =)

    hello,
    I there any one can provide Data sheet for Prius III battery control unit, I am trying to generate these signals using cRIO to eliminate the battery control unit

    is there any way that I can get the data sheet for the battery control unit for Prius III, I am trying to eliminate the battery ECU and use the cRIO to regenerate these signals

    There is no "data sheet". Toyota (and all auto manufacturers) keep these things secret. This is why I reverse-engineered the Gen II unit in the first place.

    If you guys have the engine ecu, would be most interested to see the processor type and if there is a backdoor to access it ?

    My long term hobby involves disassembling engine ecus and if the firmware is made avail could have a go at it...

    Hi Peef,
    Would you like to share some tidbits of knowledge on the tactic you chose to encourage the ICE to stay off ?
    I understand you inserted a CAN bus 'message filter' to isolate it. Even just a few words on the frames you need to modify would be helpful.

    Hi , In Prius alpha scanner shows the two fault codes as "P31AB hybrid battery cell low voltage" and "P31AA-123 Hybrid battery cell high voltage". even i checked all cells voltage one by one. But one point is very important a main relay circuit that is consisted on three relays as one for + battery line switched and one for -ve battery line switched . these two relays are not going to ON .battery voltage are 212v DC.Each cell has own 3.8volt. These are controlling by the Hybrid ECU system. ECU is not going to energize the relay to transfer the battery voltage forward on converter inverter unit. if i try to manually energize these two relay and transfer the battery voltage on the inverter converter unit . there could be a problem or not . please replay...thanks

    Don't mean to bump such an old thread but I feel like the original poster deserves more recognition.

    I've been noticing more and more cars plagued by corrosion at the B connector requiring replacement of the sensor harness and the battery computer. The harness is available from Toyota brand new for around $70 but the computer is around $700, forcing everyone to get a used one on ebay. On most of these computers where the circuit board isn't burned out the connector can be replaced and put back into operation. The problem is finding this connector receptacle. Is there a vendor that sells these?

    Try mouser. But if the harness is available then you could take the board to your bench Remove the rotten connector cut the end off the new harness and solder it to the board.

    That would probably create a new set of problems, particularly with packaging since there are 2 rows the wires would be laying one on top of the other.

    After scouring the web I have been able to locate a company in China that makes them but minimum order is about 4000 units. Going to have them send me samples and go from there.

    Yeah, most all of pEEf's contributions here were of mind blowing proportions. Shame he disappeared.

    So is the crusty B connector issue specific to a particular generation of Prius and is there a specific code(s) stored which may be a tip-off?.. Thanks(y)...

    The battery ECU fires are covered here. The corrosion tends to let the magic smoke out before any codes are stored.

    Peef is over on the Tesla forums now.
    You want to see mind blowing. He has managed to get access to the car diagnostic systems and more.
    Great for folks that are out of warranty or want to work on their own vehicles.
    Teslas are incredibly inaccessible vehicles. Independent mechanics can't even buy the diagnostic tools and software from Tesla.

    I love to hear stuff like this because to me there's no excuse for blocking folks who rightfully bought a vehicle to attempt to fix it themselves.

    This happens in stages.

    Stage 1 corrosion builds on the sensing harness and battery ecu pins
    Stage 2 corrosion bridges 2 pins together causing a strange reading in the battery live data, I often see negative value for the blocks
    Stage 3 corrosion bridges multiple pins together causing the sensing ECU and battery harness to burn out, the energy for this is taken from multiple modules. I find packs like this have low voltage readings on modules 1 through 4 while the rest are fine. I attached an image of what it looks like.

    Got my hands on a sample batch of these connectors and replaced it on a battery computer that was working fine but had corrosion on the pins, will finish a few more a test them each out for a few months to see how they hold up. I touched up a few solder joints after taking the picture (for the eagle eyed).
