We had a 2004 and there were a couple of work arounds which allowed the passenger to use the nav system while moving. After we got our 2010 I could not find anything which allowed this. I gave up searching, but decided to try again recently. We do a fair amount of long distance travel and it would be helpful for my wife to be able to look for restaurants, lodging, and other things along the way and call to make reservations without my having to pull over. Any thoughts??? BTW, the bluetooth for the phone works well, you just can't make calls while moving. Incoming calls are just fine. Thanks ABC
You can also program speed dials (while the vehicle is not moving), which then are available while the vehicle is in motion. P.S. @Munpot42, you should reclassify your Avalon as a hybrid in Fuelly, because there's no way you're getting 35 mpg out of a regular gasser. You're skewing the results for the Avalon. Edit: NVM, I see you do have your engine type classified correctly in Fuelly, but there are a lot of subclassifications for engine type, and it could be confusing for the users. There's probably some people in there that are not classifying their normal/hybrid Avalon's on Fuelly as a result.
apparently there is one for the gen III which I must have missed the last time I looked. Installation looks like a bit of a bear, but will investigate further and consider it. Thank you for the prompt suggestion.
Yes, I know, but you can't look up things or change the routing, ie make a call to a motel directly from the info screen.
we don't generally know where we are going to stop for the night until we are well along on the road or look it up to enter the number before we go.
One of the biggest drawbacks to the Prius nav system is the lockout while moving, though that's not the only drawback. That's why we kept our Garmin Nuvi and I do a LOT of pre-planning, even potential fuel stops. If we didn't have the Nuvi, I'd have my wife use her phone or tablet to find places, but that can eat into data limits. If the lockout mod were plug & play, I'd consider installing it, but at this point, the Nuvi/Prius combination works fine for us and I'm pretty sure the Nuvi will always be more up-to-date. When needed, my wife finds something on the Nuvi and then I tell the Prius to take us to it. You can buy a Nuvi with lifetime maps for less than the cost of the mod (even less for refurbished). It's nice to be able to take it inside restaurants, use it for walking tours, etc.
Google maps, once you find a destination, or POI, you can dial directly from the app. That's assuming you have a copilot.
i think you're right about installation. from what i've read here, that's the only work around, and most have gone to their phone or garmin or changed the whole h/u.
