Battery replacement at dealer

I am not familiar with this battery.

Since it is characterized as Group 51 it may have the standard diameter battery terminals instead of the smaller diameter terminals which Prius uses. If that is correct then you would need to change the terminal connectors to utilize this battery.

 

NOT for the Gen2 Prius according to Bosch.

If you had entered your model year Prius into the PepBoys vehicle profile, search for a battery, you will see this warning for the Bosch you're interested in.

Price shop Toy dealers around you. See if one will match a Toy Dealer online price or reduce theirs to come closer to the online price. Search for Toy dealer %off retail price coupons. You should easily be able to get the 45Amp Hr, SKS Prius battery, for no more than $175. This battery will come w/ a 7 year prorated warranty from Toyota.

 

So I was somewhat skeptical about this part actually fitting my Prius. However, when I went into the store, they did actually have the proper battery. It looks like the Bosch part number (51-440BAGM) is actually group size (S45B24R) and a direct fit replacement for the OEM. It is being installed for me right now. I paid $131 in total, installation included. When I thought it couldn't get any better, there is a full replacement warranty for 48 months, and then a prorated warranty up to 96 months. Unreal! Here are pictures of my new battery, as well as my receipt:

Hate it when manufactures use different model/part numbers, for different vendors, so consumers can't make an easy comparison/price shop.

If you don't already have an AGM compatible charger, consider getting one.

You should also inspect the 12V battery compartment and spare wheel well for water, from time to time. Gen2 Prius has a known rear hatch hinge area crack issue. Read this thread to know more and what to do: Water filling driver side floor pan. | PriusChat

 

I agree that is a great price.

I believe this is the same battery as the Exide Edge AGM, just sold under the Bosch label.

I have the Exide branded battery which also has a four year warranty.

 

FYI, today Pepboys online also has a 35% off coupon AND there is a $25 mail-in rebate for these batteries. You could be looking at $100+tax installed after the rebate. Our 2007 is still on the original battery. Even though it still works fine I have run it all the way down on a few occasions (leaving lights on, etc) so I am considering changing it out as preventative maintenance. Even though mine in sa non-smart key version I assume the pepboys version would work

 

You are not saving anything if you do not need to replace the battery in the first place. FOMO (fear of missing out)? If your battery is fine and tests ok, I wouldn't bother. Why send a perfectly good battery to the recyclers? As long as you fully recharge your battery after a discharge event, it will not suffer any adverse affect from that event. It is leaving it in a fully (or near fully) discharged state for any extended period of time that does the damage.

If you have the smaller (shorter in length) battery installed currently, you can install the larger battery, but you will need to swap out the battery tray for the one for SKS which is about $30 from the dealer.

 

The parts desk at our local dealership charges ~ 180 USD for the battery, which I think is msrp.

The labor charge is ridiculous.
