Anyone ever need to replace their hybrid battery?

    Who knows if 5 years is correct. That was his experience with the work they've done and I asked him point blank what his experience was knowing that I'd have to "consider the source." He's self interested of course, but the relevant point here is that the warranty he is offering is the same as the Toyota dealer at 1/3 of the price.

    Don't mistaken a warranty period to be the quality of the product. A Toyota product would offer you the standard 1 year warranty, as with all their parts. But their parts are known to go 8 years or more. A rebuilt battery......may go 1 year if you're lucky. And with most of these warranty situations, there is a few hundred dollars "traveling" fee to get you a replacement.......every time it happens.

    Hello fellow prius drivers. I am having the exact same issue described by the OP. My Prius is a 2005 model with only 65k miles on it. I live in los angeles and bought it from the Toyota Keyes dealer in Van Nuys. I have a service appointment tomorrow and I'm hoping battery is still covered under warranty. It's definitely under the 100,000 miles but because it was made in 05 and the warranty is good for 10 years... does that mean my warranty expired Jan1st 2015 or is it good thru the end of the year? I only bought the car in August and I'm worried Im about to be out $3,500

    go back to the same dealer you purchased the car, you most likely will get a new battery for free or minimal charge......even if it's slightly out of warranty.

    Thanks so much for the quick response. I'm just worried the dealer will try to bone me and say its out of warranty. I will be ready to fight for them to cover but Im not confident that I will get them to do it for me.

    If it's out of warranty, they can ask Toyota corporate to assist. Ask for a goodwill warranty and they should help you. You did buy the car from them and it's very close to the warranty period.

    yeah, i read the post from the other guy in dc, checked out the website, looked shaky to me, as do all the aftermarket providers. i think it's hit or miss with a reman, but hey, the options are limited.

    Point taken and understood JC. You are correct that I'm taking a leap of faith and they may be blowing smoke. If I misjudged, rest assured I will mea culpa and appropriately document my lesson learned. I'm not going to keep the car more than 3 years at the most, so this felt like a decent risk/reward, but time will tell.

    If I thought I was going to keep it for another 100K then I would be more inclined to take the long view.

    Okay, what exactly is a goodwill warranty so I know what I'm talking about when I'm there tomorrow?

    Goodwill warranty is a warranty they give out of the goodness of their heart. It's not a written warranty. It's usually something you can request from Toyota Corporate when you are slightly out of warranty.....and you recently purchased the car from a Toyota dealer.

    It may or may not last the time frame you are looking at. Either way as you put it, it'll be a lesson whether good or bad.

    Many come here thinking the same, the warranty period is what matters. In the case of batteries, a new battery will outlast the 1 year warranty given and a refurbished battery may require lots of service during the 1 year warranty. If you intended to keep this car long term, then it would be penny wise and pound foolish.
