In a damp climate, the growth of mould would be a greater concern than decreased air flow.

 

Just got my Prius 2007 Air Filter repalced for $3.5 including Free Installation here in Pakistan.

Changed mine last weekend. Found out the glove box piston thing was broken off. Any suggestions on how to fix that?

 

I don't know the condition it's in now (broken or completely missing), but it sounds likely you'll have to replace the piston. They're not that expensive and very easy to install. I bet there's a how-to if you search this forum. If you can't locate one, post again. Or, if you have the pieces, you could try gluing it back together using some strong glue like Gorilla Glue. But I wouldn't recommend that. Then again, if you're saying the post where the piston attaches to the glove box is broken off, that will require some more fancy engineering - or a new glove box which ain't cheap.

 

Yep the pin that holds the piston is broken off. I think the previous owner might have not know about it and brute forced it open.

 

In that case, I'd take the glove box out and try to find a screw or nut/bolt combination that you could drill into the box to act as the piston pin. Seems doable.

 

Maybe a little late to this, but I think it would be quite easy to put some sort of "stud" (HMMM), through that spot and "fix it" it that way. The whole box thing comes out quite easily (this coming from a woman who six years ago could not figure out how to GET to the Cabin filter.

I have run the car without the cabin filter now and again -- when the mice have totally peed all over it and shredded it and the parts store could not get another $4 filter for several days.

I like to keep it in there, not because I believe it does much in terms of air quality, but it keeps the mice out of the fan, so I don't have mouse parts flying about the car.

 

With your allergies you may want to consider upgrading to a Toyota charcoal filter.

 

the problem with removing it is that a lot large debris collects in there. you will wind up with leaves, pine needles and etc. in the fan and vents.

 

And "meeces" pieces.....

 

oh well, you can just point the vent at your face and catch those in your moth while driving. tasty morsels.

I likely would have covered the external vents for the few days it took. Are they not the ones just below the windshield?

 

Off topic but notable: where I found tons of pine needles and leaves, was up at the top of the front wheel wells, when pulling out the plastic liner for a look. Right at the top towards the back, kinda close to the hood hinges. There's an extra layer of plate welded in there, creating a little box for reinforcement. It's got some drip holes at the corners, but they're too small for all the flotsam that collects. I've got an attachment for my garage wet/dry with various sizes of vinyl tubing that helps to reach in there. Suck what you can, then blow the rest.

It's kinda strange: we're well past 50000 km on original cabin filter, a little dusty but still fine.
