Just wondering, I am going to be ordering a Prius tomorrow and IF it's better to order an extra Smart Key then, which would make 3 total, than I would do that. My question is did any of you get an extra Smart Key or not? Think I really will need one? Like will they wear out or would it be better to have a few back ups? Thanks so much!

Well, how many drivers are there? Mine came with 2 fobs and since I'm the only driver the remaining fob is at home as a backup. With the SKS, you don't really use the fob as much as you use the replaceable battery in the fob.

It's going to be just me - didn't know if it would ever be a problem getting another say in 10 years or so. (BTW how long do the batteries last AND if I left one as a back up, could I take it's battery out and put it back in when I needed it so it didn't waste battery or corrode or would that lose the programming to the car?) Thanks!

Once a fob is paired to the car, at the factory or by the dealer, it stays paired until it is reprogrammed. I doubt you'll have any trouble replacing your fob in 10 years, as long as you have one for the dealer to copy. You can take the battery out and no programming is lost.

OK then I will stick with the two fobs for now. I am glad you can take the battery out as well as I don't know how long the battery lasts in the fobs. Thanks so much!

Some have had the battery last 2 years. You could make it a routine of changing the battery on a certain date. There's a memo feature (at least in the 2005) so you'd get a reminder. The important thing is to have the fob away from the car as the SKS keeps trying to get in contact with the fob, which uses its battery to respond. Because of that don't forget to turn the SKS off when you're not going to use the car for a couple of weeks.

I have three fobs. If you lose both keys, you are kind of screwed, so my wife carries one, I carry the other, and the third one stays in a safe deposit box.

The reason the third one would stay in a safe deposit box is because it is worth more than its weight in gold or platinum. It is thousands of dollars to fix everything if you loose that last key.

I currently have two, but if I ever lost one I would head straight for a Toyota dealer to get a replacement.

I see. Sounds good. He said it should take 8-10 weeks for the Silver #8 so we will see! I can't wait. I loved the one I test drove!!! I will be getting rid of my Chevy S-10 Blazer so I am SO happy. (14mpg average by the way...) Thanks again everyone. I think I will stick with two and get another if I lose or break one. I don't think it would make a price difference getting it later as opposed to sooner.

Also can anyone confirm the warranty in California for the hybrid related parts? I heard it was 10 years - 150,000 miles. A couple people agreed, a few didn't know and one person said it was 8 years - 100,000 miles for the hybrid extras portion (everything but battery) but 10 year - 150,000 miles for the BATTERY in California. Anyone know for sure? Thanks.

I'm looking at my 2006 Prius Owner's Warranty Information booklet, under the section called California Emission Control Warranty (p.20), and it says the hybrid battery is covered for 10 years or 150,000 miles, whichever occurs first. The emissions control system is covered for 15 years or 150,000 miles, which includes much of the hybrid system (including battery control computer, generator, hybrid control computer, interter with converter, and electric motor). However, there is a Federal warranty on the "Hybrid System" for 8 years or 100,000 miles covering parts not included in the CA list.
