I've seen multi-page arguments in this forum about the merits of shifting into "Park" before shutting down the car versus just hitting the power button to shift the car into park and shut it down.

    Same thing.

The fact that you can change from reverse to drive while the car is in motion at some speeds but not at others indicates that all of this has been thought out, otherwise the car would not allow a mode change while in motion at all.

Driving the car causes wear and damage.

If you wish to avoid this phenomenon, then you should leave it in the garage, but then.........that's not what cars are for, are they?

There's a saying in the motorcycle community:
You have to ride YOUR ride.

    Be safe.

ETC: I agree with you. I have shifted from R to D and from D to R (while still moving slowly) on both our 2005 Prius and our 2010 Prius with NO problems at all. It's just a smooth transition from moving forward to moving backwards. The car has NO indications that it doesn't like it.

I have never had a problem shifting while the car is rolling in the opposite direction. The drive by wire system disables shifting when the car is rolling too fast.
