I want to install new speakers in my prius. What exact size of speakers will i need, and do i need brackets??? I was thinking 6x9 in the front with special brackets, and 6.5" in the rear with brackets, but some resources say 6.75" in the rear??? Also, what size are the dash speakers, 3.5"? --thanks.
hi neez. just did mine but just the rears. for sizes fronts are 6x9s, rears 6.5s, no idea bout the dash ones though.... the alpines that i got came with brackets but didn't use them. I just cut the old speakers from the factory housings then screwed (+a little epoxy) the aftermarket speakers on to the same. worked out well for me.
You should probably use an adapter for the front speakers. If nothing else, they will move the speakers away from the window glass. 6x9 adapters are available on ebay. 6.75 or so are available at crutchfield or other places. I have a used pair of those for sale also.
The dash speaker isn't a standard size hole either. Most 3" drivers should drop in but a 3.5" will need some small trimming of the plastic.
Yes, you will want to get some adapters for your speakers. The doors fit 6x9 front and 6.5/6.75 rear but not directly. You can't just screw those speakers in as they are. The Metra brackets seem to be the way to go. Others have hacked up the factory speakers and mounted their new speakers into them. I built my own from scratch. I didn't know about the Metra ones when I started but would buy those now if I was starting from scratch. There are some differences between 6.5" and 6.75" speakers. But they seem to be pretty minor and many cars and speakers work with either just fine. Especially when you have to use an adapter with it as well. In the Prius, either will work.
