I really wanted signal mirrors on my '10, but not so in the U.S. Checked out Pepboys for stuff and looked thru the lighting aisle. Found the perfect mod. LED side marker set. Amber lights, great size, $25. I put similar side lights (not LED though) on my Lexus RX; a relatively easy job. Toughest part is when that drill starts a hole in a perfectly good fender.... Will remove the front wheel well plastic cover to make sure of back fender clearance and wire route to connect to front signal. Plan to locate under the Hybrid emblem. Will upload pics when done.
Areometer has a set for the Gen II. Granted, it's more than $25 but it's an OEM part and it's a four bulb LED set. No idea if the wiring will match the Gen III's wiring.
Are the side "hybrid" badges still aligned to holes in the panels (like in the gen II 2007-2009 models)? If so, and you don't mind removing those badges, you could attach your side signalers there and route the wiring through the existing holes.
Make sure after drilling the holes that you use some type of paint to cover the bare metal. I'm sure you already knew that, but I thougt I would mention it in case someone else wanted to follow in your footsteps.
Do you realize the amber lights just above the headlights server as your side marker lights? Turn your headlights on after dark and walk to the side of the car and see. They're quite bright.
Actually, side marker lights - actually mean -turn signals. ie only flash synchronous with the turn signals. Primary function, such as signal mirrors - to alert other drivers / pedestrians your intention to merge or turn. And Jeff - Prius rusts???? The hole required is about 1/4" and includes a rubber grommet to cover the hole and insulate the wire. Dab of silicone before the grommet is installed - should do.
Im thinking of turning the existing side markers into signals like this: Front Side Marker Lights - change to turn signals | PriusChat
that's what I did/ the stock bulbs are kind of dim, so I replaced them with some from vleds; pretty good visibility even in bright sunlight/
Did this cut off the parking lights as well though? Below- I posted this a couple weeks ago, where IMeanGreen kept the parking lights, but also made them blink when the signal started. Do you know off hand if the wire coloring was the same in your 2014 as in the original post from 2010? Thanks.
the parking lights are ABOVE the main lights; they're not affected/ if you mean the side marker, yep, they're off now. it just works like an additional signal light/ the wire colors I don't know, I checked with a multimeter for 'juice' while the signal switch was on/ the whole thing is very easy to do!
