The best place to start is the 12 V battery. Assuming you can open the rear hatch, remove the flooring around the passenger rear side of the cargo area to gain access. Try disconnecting the ground (black wire) clamp from the battery post for a minute and reconnect it. If this doesn't accomplish anything, connect jumper cables from another car very carefully as you would for any jumper start. BE ABSOLUTELY SURE THAT YOU CONNECT THE CABLES CORRECTLY, POSITIVE-TO-POSITIVE, ETC. as you could seriously damage your car if you do it wrong. There's no need to even start the other car if its battery is good (and it's safer if you don't introduce that noise to the boost voltage) as you're not using it to actually crank your Prius. if it's not that, check the fuses. an also, make sure your brake light switch is making contact. have someone look at your lights while you step on the brake to power up the car.
The best place to start is the 12 V battery. While I agree with that -- I think the very first thing I would do is check your existing 12 volt battery and your existing battery connections (cables). If you have a multi-meter - check the voltage of your existing battery to make sure it isn't dead.
I just replaced my battery yesterday with one from the local parts store here in Vancouver. It is ACDelco brand part number ACDB24R. It was $164 + tax with my discount. Original quote was $210. My car is a 2010, but I would have thought the battery would last longer. My friend gave me a ride to pick up the battery and his 2001 Civic is still on the original battery.
You need to update your avatar as it says your car is a 2004. The OEM battery only has a 4-5 year expectancy. My 2010 battery died a couple of months ago. Is the Delco battery Lead Acid or AGM? Since the battery is in the cabin with you any battery venting is inside the cabin unless it has a vent tube to vent outside of the car. Was the $210 quote from a Toyota dealer? If so this was the correct battery for your car, an AGM with vent tube. The replacement battery has a 84 month warranty.
Your friend's claim is hard to believe. What apparently shortens the life of Prius 12V batteries is their low capacity and the car's low level continuous current draw while waiting for an SKS fob to happen by.
