Make sure you use a 6-point socket that fits the nut tightly. Do NOT use a cheap 12-point socket.

It would be best to use a 3/8" breaker bar to turn the socket, and a length of steel pipe to extend the length of the breaker bar if needed for additional torque.

I've seen it, yes ... Unfortunately for now I only have 12 point socket, but the high-end, manufactured by Facom (I do not know if you know this brand in the US). It appears that it bears on the surface of the nut and not on the edge.

But what are you saying worries me ...

I can buy a 6-point socket. You think it is safer?

Yes - get the 6 point socket.

I have an innate fear of 12 sided sockets since rounding off nuts and bolts with them in my youth. Quite soon after I started working on cars, I made sure I had 6 sided socket sets of all drive sizes. To this day (some years later) I avoid the 12 sided ones at all costs. I've a pretty big socket set with both types, the 12's have hardly ever been used. My favourite set is a hardened set supposed to be used for air ratchet guns. I don't have one of those but use those things wherever possible. With those, and a suitably long breaker (cheater) bar, it'll either undo or pull the head off the bolt (that's another story)

I do not recall a situation where I was forced to use a 12 sider.

I would use a 12-point socket only if the tightening/loosening torque was 10 ft.-lb or less. Otherwise, use 6-point sockets.

impact sockets are gonna be best for high torque or seized fasteners. impact sockets are blued or parkerized instead of chromed. they are meant for air tools and can take much more abuse than chromed sockets.

I need at least one of these flange nuts. I had to use a nut splitter to remove mine. Thanks.

That explains why a lot of the underside nuts and bolts are rusting like crazy. Now why can't the find rust to be a carcinogen? (n)

Maybe try McMaster Carr, they're the bees knees for fasteners.
