Good suggestions. You could keep a spare fob battery hidden separate from the fob in the car, preferably in a relatively cool location.

Update - I got the fobs from eBay and they were new, never programmed (confirmed by locksmith). They had the extra button which I expect was for the V. I took them to the best known locksmith in Salt Lake - Glen's and got both fobs programmed and both laser keys cut for $110. At that price it wasn't worth my time to buy the cable and try it myself. So, all totaled, I paid $278 for 2 new fobs all programmed and cut. I think I did OK.

That's a great deal! What symbol was on the extra button and are the keys for a 2010 Prius?

And can you share the ebay link where you purchased them?

    Thanks.

And you were replacing a 3-button smartkey for a 2010?

Yes. Only need the 3 buttons. Nothing happens if I press the hatchback.

I would check other dealerships. For a few scary hours over the weekend we lost track of one fob, and I emailed our nearby dealership, their service manager, asking how much. His response, still painful, but less than your quote. And this is Canada, home of high prices. How much less, not exactly sure: is your number inclusive of taxes? Anyway, his response:

    Hi Mandel
    FIND that key!
The transmitter and key (cut to code)
    Is 372.40 plus taxes
(can be order the same day)

With our 12% tax added it comes out to $417. Again, that's Canadian bucks, and we usually seem to pay 20% more. That was the only dealership I contacted, and I've found one that is a bit of a drive but undercuts them usually by ~10%.

Mendel, did the price include programming the fob to your car? Many dealers charge 1 hour programming fee ~$115
The price you were quoted may have only been for "the parts".

There is no way to program Gen3 with a chicken dance, you need Techstream or similar.

Also, if you lose all your fobs get ready to spend huge bucks at the dealer, + a tow.

Has anyone tried duplicating a laser key on a 3-D printer?

Why not just get a proper "emergency" door key made? They are only $16.95 delivered once you retrieve the code. All you need is a couple minutes and a Torx 30 screwdriver to retrieve the code from your door lock cylinder. Pay with Paypal, it arrives a couple days later in the mail. see Toycut - ovnisf Keys for video on how easy it is to remove door lock cylinder.

We found a local locksmith who said he could program used smartkeys so I ordered two from eBay. Checked ALL the code numbers, even the one on the IC board inside. They all matched and seller said it should work.

The smartkeys weren't the issue. The locksmith said his scan tool (T-Code Pro) couldn't connect with the immobilizer in the vehicle itself. Without that connection, he can't program the keys. Not sure if that's an issue only with used keys or not.

Luckily I can return the keys.

    Anyone ever heard of this?

If the LED works on the Fobs it's unlikely a problem with the Fobs.
The only thing that could prevent his tool from talking to the car is a blown OBD fuse, under the dash fuse panel. It's probably a 7.5 amp. (or his equipment is not good) Did the locksmith say he's actually done a Gen3 Prius before or just thinks his equipment can do it?

Before sending fobs back, ask these guys Foreign Auto Repair | The Foreign Service if they have Techstream. If they have Techstream they can do it with a little assistance from me. Tell them Paul from Boulder Hybrids sent you.

Locksmith did say he has done 2010 Prius's and this was the first time he has seen something like this.

I checked on that: there'd be an extra $30~80 labour charge, depending on model/complexity. That's on top of $372.40. All numbers Canadian $'s, pre tax.

Sorry if this is not the proper etiquette, not sure if it's better to start a new thread. I'm looking to get a new fob too and want to buy from a online toyota parts store, is this the correct part? Does anyone know if it includes a physical key blank for cutting?

    TRANSMITTER for 2010 Toyota Prius|89904-47150

    Thanks!

Good question, lol. Is there some rule on the books, that the description HAS to be cryptic/meaningless? What the heck is a "transmitter"? No visual aid either.

I got my two used smartkey fobs programmed successfully at Foreign Service in Roseville, MN. 3prongpaul recommended them and was available to walk them through it. They couldn't cut the keys though and I probably paid too much for that part but oh well. As the dealer wanted $425 for a new key I feel pretty lucky.

I'd link to the ebay item but they are all sold.

    Great post!

Will 32bit Windows XP VM run alright on a Windows 7 laptop?

    Thanks.

I'm 100% positive it will. Another option is to install techstream directly on 32bit Windows 7, which also works fine.

    Thanks
