start with a new 12 volt, and if that doesn't fix it, move onto the hybrid battery. you're covered for at least 8/100.

 

Better to check at the dealer, inverters have failed before.

The accessory 12V battery is dead. Too low voltage. surprisely the 12v battery replacement solves lot of issues. Try to borrow the one from neighborhoods or a dealership.

What does this ' CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM' flash means? As per enclosure/pix.
ODO reading is 119132km.
Car is fully serviced and maintained according to schedule . Original batteries are still in used. Nothing has been changed except the tyres and the air conditioning refrigerant recharge.The car is 4.5 years old . Driven as a personal car with a daily commute of about 60-100km.

Is the traction battery failing before the 12V battery ?

The lead batteries shows about 12V (perhaps less, inaccuracies due to the 0- 50 Voltmeter calibration ) .The toyota folks resetted the computer system without providing the error codes. Car operates as usual now but I don' t trust the dealer . The dealers ask us to bring the car back should the flash warning reappears.

"Check hybrid system" just means you have powertrain codes related to the hybrid system. These can be misfires that leads to poor performance codes and the like - it doesn't mean anything specific other than, "I've detected a malfunction and now here's some lights to bug you". You'll have to pull the code and sub code to really get a meaning, then begin diagnosis.

 

Leave the car overnight and THEN check the 12v readings. Your car is at the ideal age for the 12v to fail (usually they last 5 years/80k miles). It's a cheap fix and there are literally hundreds of similar threads on this forum.

So check the 12v after the car has been sat and let us all know your findings.

 

Hello. I have a 2010 Prius, but I'm not sure if my 12V battery has been replaced during it's lifespan or not. It looks clean and new (of course), but there's no date stamps etc on the battery. I measured the voltage after the Prius had been sitting for an hour or so, and the voltage was only 12,07. Seems to be quite low. I had the trunk open, so interior lights were on at the time of the measurement.

My question is, can you point me to good instructions on how to go about when replacing the battery. There was at least one extra sensor wire or something going to battery bracket, so I guess it's not as simple as a conventional car battery replacement ? Should I replace it myself?

 

It's easy as pie. Just take a look, maybe snap a pic if you're really concerned, but really very simple. The hardest thing is getting a 10 mm wrench on the negative terminal bolt, and it's not that hard.

 

OK, thanks. Should I disconnect the small connector going to the battery bracket or just leave it in place? What's that wire for anyway? I've replaced several car batteries before, but never to a Prius and I'm just a little concerned having seen that special cable...

 

I can't recall if I had to unclip that sensor. It is dead easy though.

 

You don't have to disconnect the wire to that sensor, but I'd disconnect it anyway to minimize chances of accidentally damaging the wire or sensor while handling the battery and bracket. Don't forget to reconnect it when finished.

Yes, changing that battery is easy.

I swapped the battery. It was very easy like you said. I didn't remove the mystery sensor cable, since I didn't get the connector off. Tried a few times, but gave up. The voltage reading with a brand new battery was 12.36 before turning on the power. Charging volt was 14.7. I charged the new battery for like an hour before installing it. Guess I have to do another measure, but I'm thinking if a have a parasitic draw of some sort?

 

That 2-wire part is a ambient temp sensor, in this case measuring the air temp of the 12V battery. The same sensor p/n (077500-5191) is located just behind the lower grill, just in front of the radiator measuring outside air temp. OK, thanks! What do you think about the voltage of the new battery? It should be like 12.6 - 12.7. I should've also measured it BEFORE I connected it, so I could do a comparison... Guess I have to disconnect it once more...

 

No need to disconnect. Check with multimeter, with car shut down, doors shut, at jump connection under hood.
