Purchased 1st prius, a 2004 Gen 2, 5/14 with 155k from original owner. Have loggged considerable miles since 28K. Few issues. Display blackout fixed by disconnecting aux battery terminal and waiting 30sec. Interesting, most posts say this happens in cold weather. Mine does it in warm weather not in cold. HID bulbs changed easily. Loosening the washer tank without disconnecting the wiring or hoses is the way to go on the passenger side. About 25 minutes first time. Now I have my first real issue. Had the oil changed and tires rotated at the dealer, with wash and vehicle inspection $39 here in MT. They let me know front brakes 4mmL, 0mm R, rear 1mm L, Omm R, so I arranged for a brake job. Morning of, get to the dealer, turn off the car, turn it back on and brake, (!), ABS, and VSC lights on constantly. Soft pedal but brakes still work. Car functions fine. Coolant pump is working, fluid whirling, brakes working but need more pedal pressure. They have yet to do the diagnostic $119. That comes 3/6/15 I did check the aux battery 11.7 in rest mode, then goes to 13.9
With a 2004, you could be looking at a failing HV battery. But you should address the problem of the black out display, that is a serious issue that requires the replacement of the combination meter. There was an extended warranty on the car for up to 9 years on this combination meter, but you are out of warranty now.
Thank you. The black out only happens to the odometer and speedometer. Everything else lights up normal. I first saw the reset on this on youtube BEFORE it happened, so I knew straight away how to reset. It happened 2 more times in 4 month, and hasn't happened in 3+ months. I contacted Mile Hybrid in Denver and got a thorough explanation.
Mile hybrid should be a shop you avoid if it can't identify the problem as a combination meter. You might have gotten it replaced for free of you went to the dealer when it first happened Did you buy the car from mile hybrid?
No bought the car from a private party. One owner 155K owned by a Toyota employee, all service records with Toyota from new. Carfax checked out clean before I purchased, and all their records matched Toyota USA
Thank you for your reply. Being new to this I'll take all the feedback I can get. Tested it again today. 11.6-11.7 Seems a new battery is in order. Posts here say 4 years. Records show this battery at just at 4 years.
Thank you for your feedback. I made them aware of the problem with the warning lights. Rather than check that 1st, they did the fronts because wear was 4mm left side and 0mm on the right side. Right rotor had a deeper groove than the left which I checked. Installed new pads and turned the rotors but did nothing to address the brake, (!), abs, vsc lights. I have a scanner to check the codes tomorrow. The I may jump OBD II- 4 to 13 as lined out in posts here to see if that clears the problem with the lights.
Just tying this in with a solution that appears to have worked for a different owner. Given the condition of the battery you mention, I think I'd get a new 12V before I spent a lot of time trying to troubleshoot codes.
Thank you for timely your input. I believe from what I've been reading you are correct. I read the thread this is tied to. Makes sense to me. I was able to pick up an excellent OBD II Innova Pro at Napa yesterday for $49.
Ran the scanner and no codes. A new battery, it's over 4 years old, and the 4 to 13 pin jump to clear the lights. Thank you again

Here is where I finished: Went back to the dealer today to get the rear brakes redone, per the above. After 1.5 hours they let me know, their mistake, they misdiagnosed the rears, and the rear brakes are fine. The checked the codes and came up with C1247 and C1300. Cleared the codes and everything is back to normal. The said if it happens again it's time to replace the STROKE SENSOR ECU $2010. 2 hours total time there. No charge.
