Dreaded flat tire and I dont like it a bit :(

Goo, if it works, doesn't require use of the jack, strength to remove the lug nuts, etc. That's about the only benefit. All of the minuses are well covered already.

I remember I took back my PiP deposit because of the spare. Then when I saw that just about every plug in has no spare either, I realize that it is the sign of times and I have to get with it.

It's just like BMW only sells turbo engines, the cigarette lighter is no longer standard, you can't see the hood of your car anymore from the driver's seat. I wouldn't be surprised if the Gen 4 Prius doesn't have a spare either.

 

There's no reason to negate the temp spare on the next gen regular Prius. If they were to that'd be deal breaker for me.

Tells us how that works for you next time you get a flat some night in Oakland waiting 1 1/2 to 2 hours for a wrecker contracted by Toyota at a lower rate to tow you to a closed Dealership.

 

That isn't the problem of the beancounters who set the fuel economy target for the next design.

I'm not going to be happy when the spare tire is no longer included, but that is the way the market is going.

Next car I try to buy without a spare will get one and a means to use it before I pay. Bean counters, economists and lazy people aside, I will never leave home without one or jumper cables.

 

it's not horrible having it sit on the hatch deck, but yes, it would be nice if they made room for it. but i cannot make a car buying decision based on that.

 

Why would I wait so long for lazy incompetent people to charge too much for a repair when I could plug a tire in 10 min and be rolling again?

After reading this thread and thinking of probabilities and opportunity costs, I purchased plug kits for all of my vehicles and will be removing the spare from the vehicles that have them. At least the last 4 flats I've had were easily repaired by plugging.

 

Aussie Leafs have one - ADR (Australian Design Rules) require it.

Without question I'll be on the road long before you "every-time" with a spare. If I'm driving, I have somewhere to be. I take care of repair (or replacement) later after proper eval and with proper tooling. But then again what do I know...I'm just some lowly mechanic.

The blowout last summer with our Prius was a 2-inch gash on the shoulder of the tire. Truck had a piece of sidewall about 1-inch diameter blow out, so both those were non-pluggable. I carry plugs pumps and goo and have used them successfully for other flats, but like having the spare also for the failures they cannot fix.
Aside: new Michelins from Costco come with roadside service guarantee from Michelin. Have those on Tundra and Prius now but have not had to use it yet.

 

In a situation where I have a blown out tire on the highway I wouldn't want to jack it up. It'd be too risky especially with family in the car. Unfortunately I think onStar or phoning someone is the best solution after safely getting out of the car and out of the road somehow. It's just not safe. And to fix a flat with a donut (what maybe 30 minutes the quickest in a regular Prius with a flag?) - then drive with the donut that can only go a max of 30 mph on a 65 mph road...I don't know.

What I do fear is have a flat with no cell coverage on a quiet road. Then what is the option? And remember donuts have to have air put into them...

There's no real good solution unless there a secondary bubble tire that comes up within the rim for just in cases...

 

^ Owners Manual says 50 mph max, for the temp spare. And I'd suspect that's very conservative. Stay in the right lane, use flashers as needed.
