While I was way off on business my wife's 2005 Prius had a pump failure @ 168K, which I thought was strange until I read of these recalls. Could you direct me to the details please?

Actually, I'm here as well as said car developed an oil leak AFTER we got it back from the dealer, and was wondering if a Tech here may know if dropping oil/filter is part of that service? Almost $800 later, we have an oil leak!?

Thank You, I just got off phone with Toyota C.S., after I checked the look up page; negative for listing there.

This was an item termed to be a "Customer Service Campaign case/recall closed" in 2011, shortly before we purchased this car.

We bought the car used from a Toyota dealership in Madison, Wi, and I thought it odd that a dealership would have let the car go w/o having done the recall, or that their fix would be failing again so soon. As most of you probably know, Toyota will only warrantee said fixes for 12 months.

The pump assembly and sensors were replaced again by us, and I have to unfortunately guess here, just a few years after initial recall campaign replacement. It's a great car otherwise, but I can't see having to pay out for continuing to replace bad parts, again and again.

C.S. opened a case for us, they will get back to us on refund after I fax in our service receipt and proof of payment. Here's the NOT SO funny part to all this; C.S. said our work had been logged as "warranty/recall work done" the month after we'd had it at Hesser Toyota here in Janesville, WI!! We paid out of pocket for it, and the Dealer submitted it as recall/warranty work the following month!!

The old 60 Minutes piece on how badly women get ripped off car dealers still holds true today. Remain vigilant!

    Which Water pump?

If referring to the Inverter Pump, that was a LSC (Limited Service Campaign), covering specific model years and specific VINs, and it ended Nov 30, 2013. It's possible your model year and VIN was not covered by this LSC. If your model year and VIN were covered, but never performed, You'll have to ask the dealer/Toyota if they can still perform it for free.

Since you recently had the car at the Toyota Dealership (assumed), they would have ran the VIN to see if there were any outstanding LSC and recalls left to be performed; the dealer would do this b/c easy free money from Corporate, and no cost to customer.

What was performed for $800? If an oil change was performed, I can guarantee you that every dealership will change the oil and oil filter; too much liability to just change the oil, leaving the old filter on.

Err, please read what I wrote: Dealer charged us, and today Toyota C.S. indicated they (Toyota Dealer) submitted it the following month as warranty work done.

It's a known trick we found at BMW Mototrcycle Dealers: sometimes their Corporate N.A. offices take extensive time to reimburse their Dealer networks for said works, which leads to Dealers double-dipping in order to " make payroll", which of course is fraud.

what do you find surprising about a pump failing on a 10 year old car with 168,000 miles?

Looks like your response posted as I was typing mine. Notice the one minute difference: 12:19PM vs 12:20PM.

Looks like you have a civil case to file, if the WI stealership doesn't refund your money.
Have you contacted the service manager at the WI stealership about the double payment (Corporate Toy and you) and requested your refund?
Can you get Corporate Toyota to send you documentation that the WI stealership was reimbursed for the inverter pump repair?
Contact the State agency in WI that covers/regulates automotive repairs?

    Good luck.

Is there a sort of anti-Prius / trolling vibe in these forums now?

We faxed in our receipt paperwork to Toyota N.A. Customer Service, and yesterday they contacted us with an excellent remedy.

Be very wary of this Dealership tactic that we call "double-dipping", it may technically be called something else (fraud), but here is again the essential scenario: You have work done on your car/motorcycle and pay out of pocket, for that work which is actually in a recall, service campaign, or also can be termed to be a Tech Service Bulletin (TSB) issued by NHSTA, etc.. The Dealership then submits that "work done" on your vehicle to their Corporate ladder for reimbursement, on the work YOU HAVE already paid for.

"exstudent"; No, I do not contact the Dealership management(s) unless it is in a face-to-face scenario and I am recording the conversation. In my experience the dealership(s) themselves will NEVER admit to wrong doing, and will NEVER give an inch towards what is an admission of guilt. Thankfully, my job provides a free legal service, and I usually just call them to handle it. With the assistance of lawyers I learned their lingo used to figure it out ahead of time. (Didn't need a lawyer with Toyota.)

In discussing your vehicle repairs with a dealership Service Department yo NEED to ask these (3) questions at a minimum: Is my vehicle repair involved in an old/new (1)recall, (2) service campaign, (3) tech service bulletin of ANY sort? Those should be asked as 3 separate questions followed up by an affirmation question of ..."Are you sure about that?"

There were several different information points on our car and it's "recalls", and a "service campaign". Just because your VIN # does not register as having an active recall or service campaign, does not mean it is unaffected-there may be "closed" campaigns which were processed incorrectly or your work done was a hatchet job.

"bisco"; We did not have..." a pump failing on a 10 year old car with 168,000 miles...". We had a systems failure with parts which were replaced under a previous "closed" campaign, recently before we purchased said car, and a dealership involved in fraud. Secondly, even if the parts had NOT been replaced, I have never had to replace ANY pumps of any sort on a Toyota before 225,000 miles; my expectations are of Toyota Quality, and NOT down to General Motors ideas. (Worked 14 years in a GM assembly Plant, I know how they DON'T build a vehicle for quality.)

As I told our C.S. Rep yesterday we'll be picking up another Prius, instead of the alternatives. Bad dealerships are everywhere, and loyal customers need to keep them honest. Hope this helps someone in the future.

i see, didn't garner that from your first post. as for replacing pumps before 225,000 miles, you're way off base, as evidenced by over 10 years of experience on priuschat.

Appreciate the follow-up; good info to know. Annoying that one has to be on top of them, to keep them honest vs life would be easier/better if they just did the right thing. If it was an honest mistake, the dealer should have refunded your money a few days later, after quick payment look-up.

    Assuming you got a refund?

FYI, the inverter pumps seem to last a decent length of time. No thread on inverter pump longevity. However, from the thread below, 150K miles was a point of one failure. Inverter pump life? | PriusChat Others had mileage in 100K range, when dealers replaced them under the recall.

The ICE water pump, lasts even longer, but many seem to replace pre-emptively.

Finally got our refund delivered last week, as Toyota NA CS had said they would.

Shouldas and couldas don't cut it; The Dealer had the details of THIS car's History, and decided to try and fleece my wife.

I was on the road with my work in Rail industry; Dealers are KNOWN to try and fleece women, to this day it IS a problem.

Did I mention it was the Toyota Dealership in Janesville, WI?

    Pin/sticky this please.

No, I'm not "way off base" as my experience comes from almost 30 years of Toyota ownership experience, which in our little family equals well over 1 million miles of Toyota travel.

Your "experience" in an internet forum membership seniority tells me you have a computer.

So, would you like to discuss real world cars and driving, or seat time with a keyboard?
