cup holder rattle - Prius v (lowercase v for the Prius v wagon)

There are wires in there next to it, I wonder of one might be rubbing.

 

Mine rattles if there is an empty can or sunglasses in it.

 

I too have a 2012 v. Had the rattle since day one. ended up removing the cupholder assembly and wrapped some teflon tape around some of the plastic pins and reinstalled. So far, no rattles in 2+ years.

 

Could you give us more specifics on this?

 

We haven't seen this, but have had rattles from objects in the pull-out tray beneath the cup-holder.

 

My 2012 v was plagued by that very same rattle for more than two years. I originally thought that it was coming from the centre armrest door, but isolating that did not rectify the issue. The dealer tried putting isolating tape along the seams of the cup holder, but that didn't work, either. The rattle eventually became so bad that they disassembled the entire centre armrest stack, isolated a bunch of stuff inside of it, and reassembled it. That fixed the issue, and I'm relieved to report that the rattle has not returned.

Unfortunately I did not do the repair myself, so I'm not able to tell you the exact procedure to follow to fix it. But at least you know you're not alone!

 

Fortunately, I hadn't had that problem.

In the past, when I had, I "glued" the stuff together with clear silicone. It holds the "snap in" tabs in places and seems to cushion the rubbing and creaking.

 

Same problem as described here and below replies. It is a higher pitch 'tinny' sound and not a heavy metal sound. Seems to vary with ambient cab temperature. Simply resting hand lightly on chrome rim of cup holder stops it. I ask same question you asked - that no one answered; HOW DO I GET THE CUP HOLDER OUT OR TAKE APART THE CONSOLE TO GET TO THE BOTTOM OF THE CUP?

 

I just grabbed the assembly by putting my fingers inside the cup holder and with outward force, pulled straight up. There are some pretty strong clips holding it in so you need to pull up pretty hard. Also, the Pwr, Eco, EV Mode button cluster will remain attached to the cupholder so don't pull too far up. There's plenty of slack in the connector wires though to do the job.

I am using this cell phone holder in my cup mount and there are no rattles. I wanted the cell phone down and out of the way... yet easy enough to see what calls might be coming in and also easy for the passenger to use if needed. It is also easy to use the Siri button if I want do instruct her to dial a contact for me or similar. I also use it sometimes for Waze... but I am not a big fan of using a cell phone while driving, so that is very limited.

I routed an iPhone charging wire using little clips from the cigarette lighter adapter to the iPhone.

Now, I have to figure out how to subdue the irritating vibration sound, which I think is between the crome 'ring' and the place it seats in. Think I recall someone describing what they did to subdue that 'tinny' vibration. Was that you?

I am trying a light coating of vasoline on all parts (ring, tabs, etc.) of the crome ring that snaps onto the top of the cup holder, hoping that this will provide enough lubrication to silence the annoying 'tinny' vibration. It will be a few days before I know. Will report back.

 

I know this is a very old thread, but wondering if anyone else is experiencing this annoying rattle -- and if anyone's resolved it.

COMMENT: The above has worked for me for about 6-9 months and then I redo it. The other post in this thread tells how the other guy and I got the cup out of the console and lubed the edge. Actually, come to think of it, I haven't had the rattle for over a year now. I did go to a body shop and got a small 'pill container' of their heaviest grease and keep it in console to redo the lub next time the noise comes back. Tom

I looked at the holder and I can't see any opening along the rim of the holder. Are you saying you were able to pull the holder up and out of where it sits and then lube it?

 

Quit putting cans of light beer in the holder. You need more weight -- try a nice Stout.

 

Just fixed this issue today. First I pulled the cup holder assembly up by grasping the inside of the cup holder firmly and tugging upward. It just pops off as a hole including the power level buttons (EV,Eco,Power). After looking at the under side of the assembly you can see that the chrome cup holder rim/ring is held down with 3 clips. Just gently pop the clips back and the chrome ring comes off. This ring was the source of the rattle in my case. You can actually see some velvet tape put on the ring by toyota to prevent rattles but it is used way to sparingly.

I just took some electrical tape and went around the indent in the base of the cup holder where the ring sits. Once the area was covered in tape, I put the ring back in place and reattached the cup holder assembly (literally just pushed it down). Next I took an exacto knife and carefully cut the excess tape that was pertruding from the side of the chrome ring. It cleaned up nice and now the ring is firmly in place with no rattles.

Before this, I could touch the ring and notice it would kinda flex and move around. this would often rattle when driving and was really annoying. I hope the electrical tape will hold up, I think it will. I hope this helps someone. I was a pretty easy job. 1 out of 5 difficulty.
