Brake lights on the dashboard (!), ABS, VSC (No error code)

    Hello all,

    I have done some maintenance on a recently purchased 2004 Prius. Namely, replaced the inverter cooling pump, the right front wheel bearing and rear brake pads.

    At a certain point, the brake, (!), VSC and ABS lights came on on the dashboard.

    My wife is driving this car so I did not get the exact moment when the lights came on after my repair jobs.

    I then replaced the 12V battery with a new one and reset the lights with the PIN 4-13 jumper on the OBDII connector. I did retrieved the error codes of each light and I googled them without any result and I now lost the paper where I had then written on :-(.

    Anyway, the reset operation did work but the lights all came back on the very next day.

    Where should I start looking now?

    You need to retrieve the DTC codes again and post as we will be guessing without the DTC's.

    Question, did you disconnect the 12V before doing the work on the wheel bearing and brake pads? Moving the brake calipers with the 12V connected can cause error codes due to the complexity of the Prius brake control system.

    Also the wheel speed sensor is mounted on the bearing housing. If this is not installed correctly it can generate error codes with the VSC and ABS systems.

    I have no error codes whatsoever. The codes I was mentioning are the codes generated by the lights themselves, one of them was 42 but I can't recall the others. I will find them again by doing the jumper operation again this evening.

    I removed the ABS master relays when I did my bearing and pads job.

    As for the speed sensor, I will try to give it a look but I'm pretty sure I put it back correctly. Unless it is VERY sensitive to alignment or something.

    The light blink codes are actually a way to read the DTC's without having a Code Reader. I have tried to search on here for the definition of the Blink Codes but cannot find what I am looking for.

    I did find one for pre-1996 Toyota and the 42 blink code was for a Vehicle Speed Sensor !

    The speed sensor alignment is fairly sensitive.

    OK, I retrieved the codes again, they are:

    ((!)): 64
    (ABS): 42
    (VSC): 45

    but where can I find a list of all those codes ?

    The first code is from the electronic brake control: C1343/64 Rear hydraulic system, right hand side malfunction. Trouble could be fluid leakage, brake actuator assembly, or disc rotor. There are INF codes that will delineate this DTC further.

    The other codes don't show up in my lists. ABS blinks in the 40's range are about the acceleration sensor, which has never been an issue that I have seen. No idea about the VSC code.

    This all seems a bit random. Try using the same shorting technique, make the car ready, and then push the brake pedal 8 times in 5 seconds to reset the codes and see if they return.

    Spot on nh70,

    I reopened my rear brakes to find out that I made a small mistake in the first place. The self adjustment mechanism was not properly located and was therefore not working. I guess that this had the pads moving too much and the sensor think that it was loosing some pressure.

    I made sure to put everything back as it should this time and took the time to adjust the brake by simply pressing the pedal several time until I could no longer hear the self adjustment clicking sound.

    I then reset the codes and it's been a week so far without any warning lights on :)

    OK, glad that worked out. It seems that the blink light protocol can give some unlisted results, as reported by others, but enough is relevant to be useful.
