Prius Sporadically Dies When I Accelerate - Codes P0303, P0420, P3191, P3125

    Don't worry about the coolant flush, that's the least of your worries. The p0420 is the problem that needs to be addressed and is likely what's causing at least one of your problems. You can either replace it with a new OEM converter (very pricey) a used one or an aftermarket. The code that worries me is 3125. Has your transaxle fluid been changed? If not, you might try that but, if you have a hard (continuous 3125), the chances of that fixing it are about 1%.

    The p0420 fault is points to the cat converter. The ecu uses the inputs from the 02 sensors to adjust air/fuel ratio. If your cat converter is bad, the ecu will over or under adjust causing a stall.

    Yes I agree with you that I was fortunate to have this car as long as I have. I know that there is a problem with the catalytic converter but also know that there is a problem with the steering too and there was no code for power steering in the list. Nonetheless, I just heard from the dealership. Here is what they shared with me:
    I have 4 codes (only one shows up on my App)
    One code has something to do with the CC
    the other three indicate a problem with Hybrid system
    1. I have a High Voltage Leak (HVL) which may be caused by mangled wiring in my car that the tech wants to repair that could be causing the HVL. However if after repairing the wiring only then will the be able to tell if my Hybrid battery system needs to replaced for an add'l $2200.00
    2. My inverter needs to be replaced and they said that it had nothing to do with the fluid I put in but that the inverter is likely the reason why my power steering is experiencing intermittent problems.
    So she said that my car is probably dying out because of the HVL.

    Total cost for all repairs is around $8,040 which doesn't include replacing the battery system which would be another $2200 if it is needed. The total cost is mostly cost of parts and only $900 for labor.
    If I choose to just fix the wiring and replace inverter then the repair would be $5512.00. Inverter is around $3000 of that cost for the part only.

    The car has around 160,000 miles on it. I am just starting a job on Monday that is a 1.5 hour commute each way for me. My credit is too bad to get a loan so that won't be an option. Now I am up shit's creek and the boat has a big leak. :)

    So a local guy says that he can look at the car and tell me if it is worth repairing.

    Used inverters are plentiful on Ebay and replacement is fairly easy. I would have him start by replacing the "mangled" wire. If it were me, I'd want to see the mangled wire before any work is done. How much to replace the wire?

    If I were in your shoes and in this boat with a big leak, I would jump ship and take a train or bus.

    Chances are this car will continue to bleed money, it's best to cut your losses early and save money for another Prius. It's unfortunate you are in this situation with a long commute and a new job coming up. Your situation will probably give me an ulcer.

    hahahaha well I have IBS-D so no ulcers yet but I am on the verge of having my first heart attack because of other stressful issues going on in my life. But I keep a positive attitude because I have gone through many woes in life and I know that just like the others I will survive this one too. These are just bumps in the road of life. This too shall pass and joy cometh in the morning and more problems will follow closely behind. :)

    So I just got off the phone with the dealership and was told that I have the following four codes but the Service Advisor that is working on my car is out to lunch and it is best for her to speak with me about my car. lol So here are the codes and when she calls me back I will check to see how much it will cost to just repair the wiring.

    Ok just got off the phone with the advisor and technician and they are suggesting that I just drive the car over the weekend. The tech said that he drove the car and it ran fine and that no error codes were retriggered. He doesn't think it makes much sense to just repair the wiring alone which would cost me $1063. He said just drive it and see if it runs ok. He said that maybe I don't even need an inverter. He said that the fluid that I put in the inverter is not a problem and that I do not have to flush it. I am going to see if I can get 8 months out of the car and then be prepared to buy another car that isn't a hybrid. :) But because of me, two of my siblings have newer Priuses and my experience with Prius is pretty much done I believe. I want to get off the ground for a while so i am going back to the SUV once I move and will have a shorter commute to work.

    Thanks everyone for your positive feedback and advice. I will keep you informed about the car's performance. Time to look at getting in a motor club. lol

    From the way you described the steering issue, it is a known issue for this model - there was a warranty extension on it until the end of last year, so you missed it by about 5 months. :( Without the warranty extension, the needed part is pretty expensive, but frequent PriusChat poster Bob Wilson is optimistic about a fix that requires only a 9-volt battery or a common wall wart, and that would certainly be worth a try. If he doesn't see this post and chime in, you can search for his other posts about it, or send him a ping.

    The dealership doesn't really care whether they know what the problem is before they try to fix it, because they're in the sweet position of getting paid for whatever they do regardless. Nice work if you can get it, but it's different for all the rest of us who are on the spending-money end of the picture - for us it makes really good sense to find out what the problem is before fixing it.

    Finding out whether your high voltage leak is in your battery, in the transaxle, the inverter, or the wiring between them will not take you very long, and you won't need fancy equipment to do it. It's just a matter of clearing and then seeing when the problem is detected again between ignition-ON-not-READY, READY-in-neutral, READY-in-gear ... you can find several threads with the details if you search this forum.

    The high price you were looking at was basically what it costs to let them sell you every piece they can think of putting in rather than finding out what the problem is. If you spend a few minutes finding that out, it will be easier to come up with realistic numbers. How does that sound?

    You've twice mentioned having the codes, and not mentioned any codes. Did they give you the codes?

    To be honest, you probably will find it helpful to be able to read the codes yourself. I'm sorry that you ended up buying, was it two, different OBD-II setups before looking around this forum for which ones work with your car, but I hope they weren't a lot of money, and it won't cost you much to get one that works either. In a pinch, several of the computers (engine control, brakes, airbags, steering, body, heat/air) can have basic codes read out just by counting light blinks if you're caught without a proper scan tool. (Steering is a bit of a pain 'cause it'll blink the codes on a light but you have to supply the light.) Trouble is, the hybrid-vehicle and battery ECUs don't have the blinkenlight option, so getting their codes requires a scantool that knows how to find them.

    My two cents - if you have a bit of time to pin down what your car actually needs, work on that before panicking about what the repairs will cost.

    Thanks Chap for taking the time to share so much detail and valuable information. I did buy a 2nd OBD II reader that should definitely work for my car it was made just for Toyotas and I confirmed with the seller that it works with 02 Prius. Unfortunately, USPS said they delivered I never received it. The first advisor at the dealership didn't give me the codes but the 2nd advisor read them off to me. But you are right I will look into each one and see what I can do to straighten things out. There is a Prius mechanic around 1.5 hours from me and he dissects problems at a much lower rate than the dealership. He is willing to look at my car as well. Again thanks to you and everyone for the time to type all that you all have and I hope this thread will be as beneficial to others as it has to me. :)

    Well my car hasn't had any repairs and is still running the warning lights never go out now. I am just driving it till one of us croaks. I am trying to buy a SUV if it is within my budget. I also plan on taking this car to one or two guys on Craigslist to get quotes on repairs. The car now feels like the brake is slightly on most of the time. Mpg has dropped to 35 mpg. sometimes while driving the brake warning light comes on and the motor makes a loud acceleration sound I have to pull over and turn off and restart the car and the light goes out and engine noise is normal. I added more inverter fluid and that helped improve the stop to start acceleration.

    If anyone wants to keep my car for a week and beta test your mechanical skills I will reimburse u for parts. ;-)

    lol yeah the dealership wanted to charge me $600 to run some test on the Prius so they can see what work needs to be done. I told them to just send it the auction. :)
