So I have a set of Michelin X-Ice 185-65-15 that are leftover from my 2007 Prius that I just traded in...I didnt realize the tires on the Gen3's are a different size My 2012 Prius tire size is 195-65-15. Can I get away with using the 185-65-15's with no harm to my new car?
The sidewall height on the 195's is 126.75mm and on the 185's it is 120.25mm... That's like the difference between new tires and balding tires, I wouldn't worry about it.
I agree that it should NOT be a big problem. I had a set of snow tires with their own wheels on my 2005 Prius (front only) and when I sold that and bought a 2010 Prius, I kept the snow tires/wheels. This is the second Winter on the 2010 with the 2005 wheels/tires on the front and no problems at all.
I put my Nokian Hakkapeliitta RSi snow tires (mounted on steel wheels) from my 2004 Prius on my new (April) 2014 Prius four. This was the first winter for my 2014 Prius and the snow tires have worked fine all winter. The only problem is that I have to put up with the low tire pressure light on the dashboard since I didn't bother buying the tire pressure gauges for these tire.
How much tread is left on your old snow tires? Maybe time to break out the credit card? Strange though, this time of year I'm wondering why the hell I'm running on snows, here on the wet coast.
I bought the tires Jan 2007. I only put about 4000 miles per year on them. Each tire has numbers imbedded in the them 8-6-4-2. When the number 4 wears away the tires should be replaced. At this point the 6 is visible on two tires and the 4 is visible on the other two. So I'll see how they wear and then decide 2016 or 2017.
