Are you from Colorado where they smoke dope and space out? That light is a warning NOT TO PUT YOUNG CHILDREN IN THE FRONT SEAT WITH THE AIRBAG ON. Air bag deployment can kill them. Remember, they did not design the car just with you in mind. There are others to consider. Say hello to Alice when you see her but don't drive stoned.

some black electrical tape cured that DANGEROUS distracting blinding light. and for $20,000 brand new car now i need to worry about the safety of the airbag itself !?!! very embarrassing ,,,

I read this entire thread because it was such an entertaining waste of time. But this comment.... I am scared now.
So on the dash there are 2 notification lights. There's the two that tell you about the passenger airbag being off and on, and then there's the one telling you about the airbag malfunctioning. They are separate lights. If the airbag is malfunctioning, he will know. What he won't know is if the passenger is on or off, but this won't be a problem if the passenger is well over 100lbs. And more so, if he drives alone most of the time, then it won't matter. Plus, it's a brand new, 2012 or more car, the chance of failure is small (although yes, still existent).
Per Toyota: "Your vehicle is equipped with a front passenger occupant classification system. This system detects the conditions of the front passenger seat and activates or deactivates the devices for front passenger. The "AIR BAG ON" or "AIR BAG OFF" light illuminates to keep the driver/front passenger advised of the system’s status." The light with a passenger seated and an air bag deployed indicates a malfunction is one of the following - "The SRS airbag system; The front passenger occupant classification system; or The seatbelt pretensioner system."
