Add Cruise Control to 2015 Prius c one?

if i were you, i will go for prius C-Two. you will be paying just 800-1000$ more and you will get cruise control and few other things.
Just for cruise control you have to spend $200 + labor and who knows if the software needs any change?

And you might be able to negotiate the price difference down to about $500.

If price is REALLY an issue, have a look at new '14s that might be "clearance" priced now.

 

i installed CC on my tacoma which was supposed to be straight forward but ended up pulling wires that i didn't think or know that i pulled. ended up costing me having to pay a pro to fix my probs, but now i have a functioning CC on my taco.

i made sure that my prius c came w/ CC

 

If you live in California cruise control is pointless. In Cali you need brake control!

 

Just bought a 2014 Prius C one in April. the only thing that I feel that I'm missing is the cruise control. I've had the back up camera and navigation and massive audio system and I really don't miss those at all. It is kind of odd to only have those front 4 speakers, but I don't really miss them either. However I do commute 400 miles a week and miss the cruise control. I've been reading up in these forums and it seems hit and miss that people say that it is easy to install. I did have a friend ook up the instructions for that Rostra kit and he wondered if a brake switch was necessary, I guess used to disengage? I can't find any information on that. Any comments from someone who used this kit?

I've had three Prius prior:
2009 at 105,000 miles with many bells and whistles (this is what I just traded in)
2005 at 172,000 miles
2001 at only 75,000 miles (someone hit me and totaled it)
And still own a 2005 with 110,000 miles (nav, no camera, good audio).

It's the same Rostra C.C. kit, but with individual installation instructions for each applicable Toyota models, not just Prius cs.

 

The 250-1836 kit includes a control switch, two screws to mount the control switch to the steering wheel and a baggie with pre-made wires which are to be inserted into specific (existing) connectors and which connect the control switch to the ECM.

The status of the C.C. system will be displayed on the Prius c's status display panel.

The C.C. system will automatically disengage whenever you depress the brake or your speed falls below 25 mph.

Rostra kits are also applicable to full-sized Priuses, and for those a steering wheel insert is available, but at least for now, a Prius c must have a 1-1/16" hole drilled in the blank insert which is supplied with the car.

I suppose eventually, OEM inserts will become available through third-party C.C. kit suppliers.

 

There is an additional kit which is necessary to convert manual transmission cars. This kit is a microswitch which senses when the clutch has been depressed.

 

Thanks! this is what I was looking for. I started reading the Rostra manual but didn't really follow it through. This doesn't sound like it should be too much of a job for someone who can build a car from the frame up!

 

The Rostra kit is generic ... it includes "wire harnesses" (really, single wires) for every possible application with an automatic transmission.

There are several times as many wires are are actually necessary for a Prius c One installation, and the extras will be discarded.

The Rostra control needs to be modified according to instructions to delete the ground wire.

The ground wire is supplied by the black wire provided in the baggie, the one with the ring connector.

The other wire necessary is the brown one.

It is the black (ground) and brown wires which are brought to the ECM connector.

The blue, green and additional brown and black wires are discarded.

This is a conceptually simple update as most of the logic is already in software within the ECM.

However, it is a complex installation as two panels and the steering wheel must be accessed.

 

I found this on ebay for $60. It looks like plug & play but I can't tell. Does anyone have experience with this product?

That is the generic Rostra cruise control switch, which many, but not all Toyotas employ as part of their engine control unit in order to implement cruise conrol.

For the Prius c, a simple modification is required to that cruise control switch. Specifically, deleting the grounding wire from the cruise control switch.

However, a Prius c also requires two additional wires which are not included with that eBay item, and which connect the cruise control switch to the c's engine control unit.

The generic complete Toyota cruise control kits include many more wires than are actually needed for a specific model car, and which could be as few as two additional wires (for an automatic transmission car), or it could be several more (for a manual transmission car). Indeed, even the generic and supposedly complete cruise control kit requires an additional kit for a clutch-equipped car.

I have seen just the Rostra cruise control switches, same item as referred to, above, for as little as $30 on eBay, but the complete kits generally cost $130 to $200, and in the latter cases, you will receive eight pre-made wires, of which you will most likely discard six of those. And, you may receive a package of installation instructions for the many Toyotas in which that cruise control switch is used.

For a c, you will have to perform major surgery on an inserted part of the steering wheel. As yet, Toyota does not list the part number for the actual inserted part for the Two, Three and Four, and the One is the only model I am aware of which would need that insert (or a modification of the blank insert which comes with the One).

To review ...

Most of the cruise control logic is already present within the software of the c's engine control unit.

It is a very simple system, with the cruise control switch outputting either zero volts or three volts or six volts on either or both of two signal lines.

The c's ECU simply reads the switch looking for any change, and then does a table lookup and performs the indicated function.

There is no YouTube video for the Prius c One, yet. For the c One, you must remove part of the steering wheel and two of the panels down near your knees, one on the right and one on the left.

You will need a universal trim removal tool, a small twist drill and a 1-1/16" dia hole saw, in addition to the "usual suspects" drivers and wrenches.

I am not a backup camera expert by any means.

The auction item is pretty clear that it requires a radio with a full-sized LCD, which would eliminate the One.

One approach would be to replace the One's radio with an identically-sized radio, but one with an LCD, from another Toyota product, such as a Corolla radio

 

The Prius c One 2015 has a full size LCD display. Do you think it will work?

 

I have a 2014 Prius c One, and its LCD is not full-sized. I bought my car brand new two months ago, and I did not look at a 2015, although they were available.

... is a partial kit, one which includes only the wires (Toyota and Rostra call these "harnesses", although in common language a "harness" is really two or more wires made into an assembly).

For a c One, you only need two of those wires:

1) the black one on the far right, which has a proprietary connector on one end and a ring connector on the other end, and

2) a brown one, which has proprietary connectors on both ends.

You will discard the remaining black, brown, green and blue wires, as those are used on a Tacoma, or another Toyota product, not on a Prius c.
