Windshield crack repair

I would think any attempt to drill even with a diamond coated burr would likely cause further damage. The common repair technique is to pressure fill a UV cured repair resin through a suction cup.
Do it yourself kits are available for $10-$15 at most auto parts stores .

Sometimes windshield repairers drill to stop it from cracking further.

I wouldn’t do it myself and would think twice even to let windshield repairer to drill it.

I have seen windshield cracks that have been drilled four times to stop them and still they did go through. And I have also seen class break when trying to drill. Normally using windshield repair resin (glue) is enough.

 

Professional windshield people have the proceedure down pat.
I was recently quoted $75 to do a "bullseye".
Some (many ?) insurance companies will pay 100% of the cost because it is much less than a new glass.

 

DON'T DIY.

That's tempered glass and you can easily shatter that into a bazillion pieces. Messed with a shower door one time...that's how I know.

If you go there, let the pros do it.

A shower door is nothing like a windshield. I always laugh at the movies where they bash a hole in the windshield like it's a side door window lol. A windshield is actually a layer of plastic sandwiched between two layers of glass. I actually have the bits/equipment and have tried a couple however it takes some practice because if you drill into the plastic it does not look very good for the end result. Most people don't know that the factory windshield should always be retained if possible because it provides much of the roofs crash strength. Most people also don't realize that MANY windshields are poorly installed and with an inferior (China glass costing about $14.00!) I always wondered how my windshield guy could drive out to my shop and replace my windshield for $130, now I know why because the glass is so cheap! I'm thinking of taking a course to get certified because there really is a demand for quality repairs. DIY kits can do a decent job in some cases however having the proper no how and equipment goes a long ways. And with the advanced resins now avail large cracks can even be filled.

 

I defer to your apparent expertise, Markus. I just didn't want the OP to go and ruin his windshield.

 

It's all good Yakoma, I'm far from an expert and hope you didn't take my reply the wrong way. Paul, I bought a diy kit from I believe crackeraser just to try it out and practice for the price considering I go through a lot of vehicles and they always seem to have a chip or 2. Once you fill a chip correctly it should never break out. The cracks yes you drill a small hole at the end and tap it so it joins the crack and leaves a small bullseye. So far I'm not liking the kit however it could be operator error since I have not practiced enough yet. I guess you normally don't need to drill unless you want to stop a crack or speed up the fill time. It's pretty hard to ruin a windshield and like I said those parts store kits do a pretty darn good job it you let them sit long enough to fill everything.

Same over here. I had a couple of chips in my windscreen and one was a bullet/round type. They were both repaired for free through my insurance and you can hardly tell they were ever there; one is almost invisible and the other a small imperfection. One thing though, they're legally not allowed to repair a chip if it's in the drivers direct field of view.

You really don't want to replace your windscreen unless you absolutely have to; new ones are never the same.
