Tire Alternatives

Michelin Defender was the successor to the Harmony line. I've got Defenders on now and they've been good (passed the deer test twice in a few months after installation), though I remember thinking they were louder than my old Harmonies. That might be unfair, as of course I was comparing new Defenders to worn Harmonies.

You don't have many choices in that size. The Defender would be my top pick given its high tread wear warranty. That helps make up for any losses in efficiency.

 

What's the deer test? Hitting one or dodging one?

 

Passing the deer test is when both you and the deer agree you passed.

I also got defenders two months ago, had goodyears on before and I don't recall the brand. My MPG went from 47-49 to 40-43.

 

It'll get better. Had you installed brand new Goodyears you would have noticed a small loss just because they are new vs. old. The Defenders are better in almost every way except fuel economy but they last longer so it evens out. Be happy with the purchase.

 

Some here will counsel to overinflate by 20% or more for better MPG. Others will suggest sticking with Toyota specs since their engineers are the ones thoroughly testing the driving characteristics of the car and tires (at least in theory).

Personally, I overinflate at least 10% simply because I tend not to check tire pressures regularly enough and this compensates (in tire wear) for driving on them underinflated for a period. I will try to get more diligent with this and also monitor MPG at higher pressures to see if I see a gain.

 

Michelin seems to have discontinued its defenders in 175/65R14 size. I have heard reports that 195/70R14 will fit the rims and in the wheel wells, but I do not have personal experience. Uniroyal TigerPaws (60k wear-out warranty) does seem to be available...

 

I have Hancook Optimos my 02, previous owner put a nice set on. Love 'em! I do believe that Discount Tire carry's them. And they are moderately priced.
