I wish I had known about this technique a long time ago. Take a liter 7-Up container and cut the top off. After you have loosened the oil filter slip the Coke container over the filter and continue with the other hand to loosen and remove the filter. If you drop the oil filter or spill any of the contents – it goes into the Fresca container – "VOILA NO MESS!" (Actually, for my Prius, I use the bottom half of a 32 oz. International Delight container.) I also have a Fumoto Valve – no mess with the oil plug and no worry about a washer gasket. Kathleen
Wish I would have thought of that. I'm sure this will work great when I change the oil in my boat. Thanks !! Ken
The one I've always used is a sturdy plastic bag. You can then actually hold the filter THROUGH the bag, so to speak. So you wrap it all up, and just twist it off by grabbing the filter that is now inside the big. Not sure how you hold the filter with a stiff plastic bottle around it... And I'm confused... Do we use 7up, Fresca or this crazy international stuff?

No matter how you get the oil filter out, you should always let it drain into the waste oil to be recycled. I don't have the estimated figures, but there is a huge amount of oil that stays with the used filters and doesn't get recycled.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(sub3marathonman @ Apr 6 2006, 11:23 AM) </div> At my recycler, there is a special bin for the filters. They separate the metal from the oil during the recycle process.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(sub3marathonman @ Apr 6 2006, 01:23 PM) </div> That's a great point you brought up: think about how many used oil filters are tossed out with the trash to end up leaching in a landfill somewhere. Only in the last 12 years or so have oil filter crushers been used in most shops, to try to squeeze the last bit of oil out of the filter. Even then it’s a messy recycling process, the media is saturated and everything is tossed into the furnace at once. There is a slow return to spin-off cans with replaceable media inside, like the new Ford PowerStroke. It’s a lot more environmentally friendly. <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Kathleen2 @ Apr 4 2006, 05:05 PM) </div> Kathleen: I've just smacked my forehead and said to my cat "why the hell didn't I think of that!" Great tip, thanks. jay
I have this same valave on my 4-Runner and Love it, it makes life easy, but the only draw back is that it does slow the flow down so it does take longer for it to completly drain the system. At least I don't have to really worry about getting my hands full of oil though. <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(seasalsa @ Apr 4 2006, 09:11 PM) </div>
