my 2005 Prius has about 130k and has no issues. Lately, after the engine is switched off, when I am about to exit the cabin I hear this beep that keeps going on and on. The sound is similar to the audio indication if you open the door when you leave your key fob in its receptacle, but I check the key fob, I check the lights, nothing is on. I couldn't figure what is causing this noise. Finally decided to just lock the doors and walk away. I was worried my battery would be drained the next day morning but the next day it starts OK. This has happened a couple of times in the past three months. At this point this is just an annoyance, but I don't want this to become an issue. Is there something I suould check? What's causing this? Thanks in advance for help/tips.
Well, one of the fobs won't work remotely anymore, so I was using the other one. The "other one" is what was causing the beep when I exit. Interestingly last Wednesday my car wouldn't start when I was leaving for work. But after a while I tried once again it did start. I thought the fuel was low, as it has happened once before on a hot day, the fuel gauge was on 2 bars and the car didn't start. So once it started, first thing I went to gas station and filled the tank. It was working OK for the next few days. But once again, this Wednesday! morning it wouldn't start. I am unable to lock (both the fob as well as the door switch won't work). And nothing comes up on the display. No lights, nothing. Do I need to replace my auxiliary battery? My dealer quotes 250 bucks, is that reasonable? thanks!
ed's right, it's your aux battery. $250. is very reasonable. someone just paid $330. the battery itself is around $200. or an aftermarket can be as low as $150.

Prius003, did you get your problem resolved? I am referring more to the beeping than anything. Kind of sounded like you had more than one problem, but not sure. Thanks, and best of luck to you!
There is no problem with starting when the gas gauge is at 2 bars, although the exact level in the tank may vary a bit due to the bladder. If the car does run out of gas and the engine does not start, it will log a DTC and turn on warning lights on the dash.
I'm having the same issue. After shutting off the car, if I open the door, I hear beeping - typical of what I hear when the key fob is left in place. If I shut the door, it stops. Interestingly, it only occurs when I park at an angle, with the driver's side lower than the passenger side. When parked level, this does not occur. Based on this, I'm suspecting the device that detects the presence of the key. Anyone know how that system works? Any other ideas that would produce a level dependent beep?
Doesn't directly address your question, but I recently purchased an OVNI key as a spare. One of the cautions was that using it would potentially produce this beep when shutting the car off because the car thinks the key is still in the ignition. Remedy is to stick your finger in the slot so the car thinks the key has been removed. You might try that. It might turn the beep off. With regards to the level differential, I'm gonna put on my Stump The Chumps hat here and guess that maybe your 12v is going bad. Others have noted above that this behavior is indicative of a bad 12v battery. Perhaps there's a bad cell there and the liquid in the battery susceptible to the forces of gravity is draining away from an element in the battery and the voltage is dropping beyond the threshold resulting in a warning indicator. Of course, you could move further SOUTH and not worry about parking on any inclines.
I just wanted to add my own solutions for those that search in the future. My 08 prius would beep as if my key was in the ignition on occasion. After reading posts I changed my battery, which didn't test out bad. I thought all was well but a couple weeks later it came back. A week after that I came back to a dead car. I went poking around after that and found my ground wire that goes from the negative of the battery to the frame was loose where it connected to the frame. It was not ever removed but it probably got twisted the wrong way and worked itself loose. Tightened it up and viola, working for a month now. Just want the Internet to know in the prius beeping or beeps after car is turned off or parked searches. I also got a intermittent parking brake lock not engaged error during this issue Good luck Internet.
Thanks crrazychicken - I'm a firm believer in archival posts. I'll check that ground wire. Two nights ago, I had this happen again, except this time it occurred when the car was level. After removing the key, it kept beeping. I falsely assumed that it stopped when I shut the door. Went for a bike ride and returned to a dead battery. First attempt to jump off the car failed, but the second worked and has been ok since.
