On the MSN homepage today is a video of how they are raising the MPG for SUV's and it interviews a Prius owner. SUV Link
I saw this when it originaly aired. I am happy to see somthing happen but I fear it is to little to late. It should be manditory 25mpg by 2009 and 50mpg by 2012.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Hawk @ Apr 3 2006, 11:14 AM) </div> That's a understatement. Better MPG. Huh! They're doing only the absolute minimum. That 1.8 MPG required increase by 2011 is very disappointing. Fortunately, the good news is that the appeal of guzzlers is souring... while at the same time the reputation of hybrids is growing more positive.
I too saw this when it first aired. I don't think we are going far enough in increasing gas mileage and decreasing dependency on oil...we have much further to go and Detroit has a long, long way to go.
LOL! What is the advertisement for the video while it was loading? A GMC Yukon commercial. I thought the bit of the guy from SUV owners of American was a bit alarmist. We may see SUVs and truck with less capacity, less hauling capacity (and the kicker), less safety? Oh my gosh, the SUV isn't going to be able to make in this world and be a death trap because it has to get better mileage! I agree that we should be doing more, the standards for cars should have been raised as well.
I liked the Sierra Club's response in the original airing. "It's like asking a three pack a day smoker to cut back on a cigarette". It's election year politics. Just enough to fool the voters, not enough to upset the big boys. And did you see how the Congress patted themselves on the back?
