I just totaled my 2004 Prius and am getting a 2006 Prius. The 2006 does NOT have a nav system. I was wondering if it is possible to just purchase a nav system/screen and replace the one that is in the 2006 if that would work? or is there more to it then that.

It's not quite that simple to install a Toyota built Nav/radio. The nav part is a separate unit that mounts under the passenger seat and needs a different wiring harness. Plan on taking the whole dash apart to put the antenna in. Also the data for the Nav would be very old and the Toyota DVD updates are VERY expensive. I suggest you just buy a Garmin.

I now have a dual screen setup in my 2004 Prius that I'm quite happy with - I replaced the CD/Cassette with a Pioneer NEX 4000 - CarPlay is great and using CarPlay the navigation is really solid - no navigation by default if your not going to use CarPlay though - steering wheel volume and track skip all work too

    Thanks.

Googled the radio and carplay. Looks like a nice setup. A little pricy but not much more then a good nav system and the aux adapter to hook up the iPhone to the factory radio. Do you have to buy any seperate adapters (aside from the wire harnace for the Prius to the stereo) does it need an adapter for iPhone or steering wheel or is it included? Does it interfere with resetting the oil change check engine lights at all? Any issues with it? Just want to make sure it works well and what all I will need before spending that much. Also does it need any amp? Or is the sound ok with out?

Do I just use my iPhone plug and connect it to the USB in the back? Looking at pioneers site it was saying something about needing an hdmi as well. I just want something that I can hook my phone up to and use the nav and play my music and phone.

I think you are MUCH better off using a smart phone or a stand-alone unit like a Garmin.
It won't look as "cool" but will work much better and be MUCH less expensive.

OK but none of that has anything to do with how capable or economical the GPS function IS.
I rate the one in my C as "barely adequate"; that's one or two steps below good.

there are many replacement head units which will do anything you want (nav, bt audio, carplay, etc.) virtually all of them sound way better than the crap factory stereo. if you love music you'll want to replace the speakers (easy diy) as well. it will sound and function better than the jbl nav system. crutchfield.com can hook you up, + any needed adapters or whatever and they ship fast. if you get the right stuff you won't have any wires flopping around in your car either.
I had a kenwood in my '04 and I liked it better than the jbl in my '06

I like the sound of the JBL premium 9-speaker setup in my Prius. I will admit it's very nice to have the navigation in the dash, but I have Toyota's nav system and it's pretty crap. The honest best thing about it is I can see where I am very quickly if I get disoriented - this is about all it's useful for to me, because it's illegal to use my phone while driving and the Toyota nav picks up the location extremely quickly. I still have to research and plan routes on google maps beforehand, or pull over and use my phone if I'm really in need of guidance. If you're set on having in-dash nav, I'd recommend some sort of aftermarket head unit as others have suggested. It will be competitive price and just about as much trouble as installing the Toyota nav anyway, and you can get a lot more and easier functionality. Otherwise, Garmin etc. have great systems with free maps for life, just no in-dash Garmins that I know of. Google Maps on your phone or tablet will always have the best maps and routing, if you want to go that route.

I just ordered the pioneer 4000nex and wires to connect my iPhone to. It will mirror my maps from my phone and incorporate my iTunes, phone, voice text, and pandora apps all through a 7" display. I can also connect external displays as well and let my kids watch DVDs in the back with headphones while I still listen to my music. From what I've researched it looks like it will be an amazing system.

Please check back and let us know if it lives up to all of it's claims and how you like it overall.

I purchased the 4000nex. It's amazing. Sound is incredible. Very easy instal as well. Using my iPhone and CarPlay. The gps is wonderful with it. Better then the one from Toyota. This is everything you need with prices. I got everything from Amazon and used prime for free two day shipping. Best sounding system I've ever had. Need iphone 5 or higher for CarPlay. Stereo works with other phones just not the CarPlay feature.

Hi -- I am interested in installing the AVH-4100NEX and I assume this same approach will work. A couple quick questions -- Is this a replacement for the built-in screen or a second screen? Do all the steering wheel controls work? The backup camera? Thanks for your help!

the head unit gets replaced, which is just below the display. so you have 2 separate screens. everything will work if you buy the correct interface for your head unit.

It seems like the second screen would be hard to see what is happening with CarPlay. Can you post a pic? Right now I use a ProClip so it is right by the wheel where I can see maps, etc. Fairly convenient... except audio is crappy through Aux. I have a bluetooth dongle to stream but that's a nuisance.
