Anyone bought a second PIP?

Yes. We own two 2013 PIP's and we love them both. One is approaching 40k miles and the other 30k miles.

 

i tried to talk my wife into one, but she loved her '08 hycam too much and got another one.

 

I originally went to the dealer for a hybrid Camary and they did not have any in stock. Settled on a used 2011 Prius. Have since traded in on our PIP's. How do you like the Camary hybrid?

 

it's great. this is her fifth camry, second hybrid. i like to take it to florida because it's roomy, comfortable and quiet. right now, she's at 49 mpg on the mfd, with a hundred miles on the tank, but that will drop a little with the cold weather. i wouldn't give up my pip though, i want more ev miles, not less!

thank you. i do encourage her to take the pip when she's doing short errands, warm ups can really kill the mpg's on 1 or 2 mile trips.

 

4 or 6 cylinder in the Camry? What size?

 

The hybrid Camry has a 2.5L 4 cylinder Atkinson ICE.

correct. the regular camry's were 4 cylinders, used to average in the high 20's.

 

She must be quite the hypermiler!

 

she's a lead foot actually, and does mostly short trips. i'd like to get my hands on it for a tankful and see what i could do.

 

...what I hear HyCam has really good gaso tank size so cruising range is long. I also hear high MPG number but I wonder if its MFD or calc.

 

same as other toyota's, you can see our last florida trip in the hycam thread. it runs 1 - 3 mpg below mfd, depending on the fill up. she doesn't record her stats, but i'd guess lifetime to date is in the low 40's actual. you're right, cruising range is fabulous at 700 miles or so, but we drive the speed limits.

 

I just went through this dilemma. I bought a new PiP in May, and my wife was due for a new car in October. Based on her needs (short commute distance in heavy traffic, availability of "free" charging at work, space requirements, not ugly, etc), the Volt was just about a perfect fit. Since we always use my car on the weekends, it doesn't matter that the Volt is too small to fit our whole family, stroller, etc. On the other hand, she never needs to charge at home, and never uses a drop of gasoline, so that's a big expense that's disappeared. I would have recommended a BEV, but she does not want to give up the ICE safety net. Looking back, I'd probably still make the same decision to buy the PiP for myself, but I had a different set of criteria for a new car. (for me it was about efficiency over a longer driving range at moderate speeds and interior/cargo space) If somebody made a BEV station wagon with reasonable electric range and a range extender ICE, I'd be all over it. For what it's worth, I was coming from an Audi allroad, and my wife from a VW CC.

 

I am eager to see the new Volt. But if I needed something right now. I would keep the PiP and lease a Leaf, as our second car. The BEV space is moving so fast I would not want to buy one yet.

 

Excellent point on the technological advancement, and that's exactly why we leased the Volt. I think that the lenders are WAY to optimistic about how much a 2014 Volt is going to be worth in 2017. With a new generation of all the plug-in vehicles between now and then, I think that the value of these cars will be plummeting! It didn't make sense for my PiP, since I go through a lot of miles, but I predict that the PiPs will hold their value better anyway, based on what I've seen so far.

 

Love the PiP and BEV combo. That is probably what I will do someday.

 

I bought my first one in Jan2014 then second one in July2014. About to buy a third one since after tax rebate and green sticker which I value about $3000-5000. It will be cheaper than Prius Four or Five.
