I can list (and have here) ~20 things I don't like about my Prius, and ~20 things I do.

And the important ones to me win over the not so important ones so I drive a specific Prius.

If you have other priorities, you should go in another direction.

The flying buttress console was one of the things that really made me think again about buying a Prius. I ended up buying one anyway and I actually don't mind the console at all. I rarely have passengers, so my bag always ends up in the passenger seat, and I realize now that this was the case even when I didn't have a buttress console. When I have passengers, I just sneak my bag into the space below before they get in and I have no issues. Of course, it always depends on personal preference and how you use that space, but I'm finding I don't dislike it as much as I thought I would.

I won't try to change your mind on what you like and don't like. However, I've noticed that many cars are starting to put a higher bridge in their cars. Just, not as high as the Prius.

Neither the c nor the v have the buttress.

I didn't like it at first as I'm a big fella but I got used to it quickly and never give a thought any more. As noted, the c and v don't have it so if it's do-or-die for you, you might want to look at one of those instead.

These things are all just a matter of personal taste, but I really like the buttress console and hope it remains a permanent design element.

Hopefully they will either get rid of it or do it properly in the Gen 4.

You can always venture to modify the dash. I hardly believe there are wires running through the upper part of the console, to just cut it off where the cup holder is. Or a bit more: remove everything below the EV/Eco/Power buttons, remount the hazard switch and mount a pushbutton gearchange.

I used to think that flying buttress was bserk! And another thing was view out the rear view mirror where the hatch bisects the view because of the design of the trunk lid. Not to mention the digital speedometer and eco monitor and centered dash display. All these things make the prius unique. I got to accustomed to everything and think nothing more of it now. Perhaps in time you will to?

The core values are the reason why I bought the car - reliability, fuel efficiency, practicality of a trunk + 5 seating and safety. Everything else that is an oddity is not really significant in my case.

Your profile and past postings seem to suggest you own a Prius c?

    No "buttress" there.

If you are interested in a "standard Prius" but don't like the buttress? Then that's a deal breaker.

Or you could hold out and see if the Gen 4 keeps with the buttress design.

I personally didn't particularly like the buttress, but since owning The Prius, it's not as bad as I thought. It grows on you.

The flying buttress never bothered me oddly enough. I thought it would, but I just kind of adapted to it.

I like how high the cup holder sits though. Convenient place for me to put my phone, and a small cup-shaped power inverter in the second cup for recharging stuff.

Yep, that's how I kind of felt. Except for I really thought I would dislike the buttress.

But even if I would say I don't love it...I don't hate it either. It just is. And there are benefits to the "Cock Pit" feel and having the out of direct visual sight the buttress creates.

I've come to like big buttresses. I cannot lie.

I think the point of the Prius is get more new driver into them to ultimately save more gas and reduce emissions.

People can only tolerate so much change. To produce a rather foreign, hyper-futuristic front cabin / console I think was not the smartest thing to do. Maybe they dig it more in Japan.

Make the front space inviting, familiar yet modern and most of all laid out very straight and true. (I can't stand crooked steering wheels and the all new Corolla is noticeably out of line with the dr. seat.)

btw, that 'flying buttress' really messed up the options for placing the rear cupholder.

I use armrests while having both hands on steering wheel cause I can can can, and my elbow would land right smack in the rear cupholder in a 2012+ Prius liftback.

Want to photo that for all to see?

I'm 6' long legs . I didn't know there was a problem until I read about here and on other threads :) Small items are easily placed on the back seat, smaller items (read Kindle and a box of tissues) go below the console.
