$3K dealer installed... wow! They go for $225 0n ebay ( 10 11 Toyota Prius Brake Master Cylinder with ABS Module Anti Lock VSC | eBay). Even if it was $75 for overnight shipping you would have saved a bundle. List price for new is $2366 so that's probably what they charged you for the part, and $634 for labor. Get a rental car for a few days if needed to save $2k...
I'm disappointing but not surprised. Get a second opinion!! Tell Corporate that if they insist on backing the dealer that you'll look for a car company that backs the customer instead. Good Luck!
honda. no wait, they screwed their customers on batteries. gm? nope, failed to disclose deadly ignition switch. ford? nope lied about mpg's. chrysler? that's it!
Complain to Toyota. Don't give up. You can always go aftermarket route for cheap. Leave that as a last option.
WOW - That price is ridiculous! I would sure let "corporate Toyota" (and your dealer) know that you will NOT be buying another Prius because of this. One would think they would "cut you some slack" (especially your dealer) and do the job for cost, at least NO mark-up on the parts. Sorry to hear this..............
I rely on a certified Independent tech for diagnostic advise and parts though I often choose to do my own work. I trust my mechanic because I verify everything independently. iPhone ?
+1 Never pay stealership prices. Even if you paid stealership labour on one you get overnight shipped from elsewhere, that is a lot to save. These sorts of personal experiences drive people away from a brand even though overall it is drop in the bucket statistically. Truth is you are still better off with a Toyota than other makers if you go by numbers. Of course you can get lucky and have a Daewoo that goes 500K miles without needing anything or a rock solid Prius have a part fail at 50K. That's why statistics are statistics and not guarantees.
The master brake cylinder failed in my 2012 Prius V in September. Initially, the dealer told me a sensor had gone. This cost $800 to replace. Now to replace the master brake cylinder is $3600 plus they tell me my brakes may need to be done, but they can't assess until the master brake cylinder is replaced. They are not budging on costs, except a 10% discount on the cost of the part. This could end up costing upwards of $5000. I have called several local repair shops but none of them will touch the hybrids because they don't have experience with them. The car has 144,000 km and all dealer maintenance to date. Do I walk away and sell the undriveable car for parts (I will have to get it towed off the lot at my own expense) or do I pay out all this money and hope I get another few years out of it? This is my first - and last - Toyota.
Always a possibility of getting a lemon with any make. You are LESS likely to get such a lemon from Toyota. That's a proven fact due to design practices.
@natD There is a warranty extension on some models/years. Did dealership check into that? Here's the letter we got: Bottom line is 10 years or 240K kms, you're covered, if you're in the target group.
Take a look at the following two documents, it looks like the master cylinder would be covered as Mendel mentioned. FWIW There is also a phone number on the campaign letter you can call if you have trouble at your local dealership.
