my key only works now if I push it in the slot next to the steering wheel. I never had trouble with it before. It also only works intermittently for locking/unlocking the doors.

Do I need a new key?

    What is a FOB?

THanks in advance. I need to get a manual -- the little one on the glove box didn't answer the question.

Battery in the fobs will be mi best guess! Got the same problem moths ago, it ended up being the batteries inside both fobs.

    Hi Kermitt,
Thanks, but I don't see a place where a battery would go......? My Prius is 2005, maybe there weren't batteries for the keys yet? I really don't know.

the owners manual instructs how to open the key fob and replace the battery. the fob is the rectangular plastic device withe the lock/unlock buttons. if you lost your manual, there are threads here with pics or you can google a tube vid.

I had to replace of ours, for the second time, car manufactured Aug, 2009. With third gen there's an in-dash warning that the battery's getting low. First had it a week ago, so got replacement battery. Checked voltage of old and new: they BOTH showed 3.00 volt.

So I just put the old one back. Warning came back about a week later, so I figured I better believe it, switched it for the new. It did occur to me as I was prying the battery out of the exposed and fragile looking circuit board, I better not break this puppy...
