Any vehicle burning more than a quart in 500 miles could not possibly pass California smog check.

Canada has colder weather, on average. That's why the interval is shorter than the US.

The Prius is not subject to smog checks in California. (I don't know about other hybrids.)

There is a dip stick in the car, you could check the oil once in a while...

Checking it at every gas fill-up is a good practice.

It's a habit of mine checking the oil twice per week. I top up the washer fluid at the same time. No big deal and no surprise loss of oil.

Every gas fill-up, every 5,000 miles... not much different with this car. :)

Because a Prius burning a quart every 500 miles would be belching blue smoke? There is a hotline to report smoking vehicles.
