Your Fully Charged EV Miles Range

I picked up my new 2012 Prius Plug-in in April 2014. It had been sitting at the dealership since it was delivered. When I drove it off their lot, the EV range said 22.9 kms (14.23 miles). Since then, I never saw it that high again. Typically, after a plug-in charge, the EV range is 18.9 km (11.7 miles).

My best guess is that they charged it in a warm shop, letting it top itself up completely, then when they parked it outside, the temperature was around freezing. Perhaps that change in temperature somehow affected the way the car calculates it's EV range.

I actually have no idea why it varied like that, but I'm interested in hearing from anyone who thinks they know.

 

welcome to priuschat and the pip club! sorry to hear it, mine has been around 16 since i got it 2 1/2 years ago. you might want to have it checked out. could be as simple as a bad 12v or something. all the best!

 

The biggest factors on EV range are average outside temp averaged over x days or trips (where x is 14 + or - 7) and efficient driving. A good measure of that is low ave MPH over last x trips or just running ave MPG. That is based on my observations in the 1.5 years with our PiP.

I wish I could get the right Toyota engineer drunk so they would tell me the actual formula. There is definitely a seasonal fluctuation with lower ranges in colder temperatures. Also the people with really high EV ranges tend to report really low MPH averages. The way that the EV range moves so slowly higher or lower indicates that there is some averaging over time going on.

Does anyone have EV range spreadsheet tracking over a full year?

We are getting close to 12 EV miles in the summer and close to 10 EV miles in the winter.

Since I got it at the end of April the fully-charged EV range is almost always 13.6 miles (give or take .2). In actual driving I get around 12 miles of EV range....depending on how hard I push the accelerator.

 

I seldom get more than 9 miles on the meter. I live in Tarrytown, NY, on the river, so every place is up a steep hill to start and among hills, and I take the parkways and thruway, so 55-60 most of the time. But 9 miles is just a tad longer than my commute, so it works out well.

 

I'm looking for EV miles on the display after each full charge over time. I don't see that in the PiP & MPG spreadsheet google doc. Am I missing something bisco?

Maybe I'll just start my own EV range spreadsheet and record the wife's stats. I'll have to go out in the garage every morning and wish her safe travels for her work commute. I can make that a fun task.

 

I'm in the 12-14 fully charged range. I pre-ordered my PIP and received it March 2012... It originally fully charged in the 14s, then at times (e.g., during winters) it dipped to charging fully in the 12s, and recently I'm back up in to the 14s...

 

During the summer I got up to 15.5, but that was with a regular return commute where I switched to HV for some steeper climbs and then back to EV for some long downhill stretches, and with a lot of 30-40 mph roads. And the EU PiP switches to HV at 53 so will inevitably show higher EV range. If you watch what the range does as you drive, it is quickly obvious that acceleleration and uphill climbs skew it dramatically.

 

I think chazz8 has hit the salient points - average temperatures during some period of time and perhaps even more important, in my opinion, efficient driving. I bought the PiP new last December, just as the brutal winter was starting, and was charging EV mileage between 12-13 miles starting off. I don't think that amount ever dropped, and by March the number was rising until by the end of June I was typically charging 19-20 EV miles overnight. In August I was just shy of 21 and now it's fallen back to low-mid 19s. I've become convinced that how I drive contributed to the slow accumulation of charged miles, and I'm pretty sure that actual mileage correspondingly rose also, although I haven't tried to meticulously determine that. Given the way I drive, I know actual is higher than the 12 that people are reporting.

 

I bought my pip last December and the ev range was 12.8 miles. During the winter the range went down to 10.8, then in the spring it started increasing again and is currently at 14.9 which is the highest I have seen.

 

i'm sorry, i thought you meant actual ev miles. why are you concerned about the estimate?

 

I'm interested in estimated or actual EV miles per full charge. Then I can observe the change with the seasons here in central NY over wife's 16 mile round trip work commute, plus fairly regular family errands.

Estimate is just easier to record for me, and it might provide some insights into Toyota's formula for EV miles.

 

I have a net downhill trip on my way to work, so I generally see 17-19 miles EV range indicated, and generally get about 18 miles out of it, driving 60mph on the freeway for most of the distance. It's not really fair to compare this to others, though, as it seems the PIP will generally average your personal recent EV range/experience for an initial estimate.

 

I'm caring less and less about estimated EV miles since I bought the car. They disappear fairly rapidly after you unplug, whether you use them or not. I've seen no apparent correlation between the loss of EV miles and any increase in fuel efficiency. There must be some increase however, unless the laws of physics have changed.

This only tends to support my suspicions that the computer is designed more to show us what we want to see, rather than what's actually happening.

 

Depends on how I drive ! Sometimes it is a high as 15.1 and sometimes as low as 13.6 I live in a hilly area, and when i drive downhill a lot I can get many miles of EV on a given charge. The next time I charge it shows me 15.1

 

My normal starting EV Estimate is about 12.3 EV. Summer.
Winter low starting EV Estimate 9.3 EV.
Summer High starting Estimate 19.0.
My high for all EV no HV used, is 22.1 ev, with .2 left from my garage and back to my garage.

It's easy to play the game if you really want to!

If you mix EV and HV, I have gone 43.5 miles of EV on one charge by using HV and then only EV when going down hill and pulse and glide, could have went a lot farther but it gets pretty boring!

 

Greg is on the money on this one, I get 11 to 15 miles of electric charge no matter what the estimated amount says on the display. I have had on a consistent basis 24.8 estimated miles every day for the last year. It's still 11-15 in real life miles. We just enjoy the great mileage, what ever it is. When we fell like driving slow or fast we do it. Period.

 

I think we have found the Pulse and Glide for the PiP. It's not to do the pulse in EV mode but rather HV mode and then use EV to glide when you get most distance for your EV power (down hill).

So Pulse and Glide in a non-plug in maximizes HV MPG and P&G in a plug in maximizes EV range and MPGe. Now it finally makes sense to me. Thanks for the insights retired.
